a. Note:   N206 Age 3 in 1860 census living on a farm in Duncanton, Illinois. Often watched the soldiers drill that were going off to the Civil War (which two of his Powell uncles did), thought the month of March was named after soldiers marching. Age 12 in 1870 census living on farm in Indian Creek township, Illinois with mother and 6 siblings. Was baptized and ordained in the Walnut Grove Baptist Church. In about 1873 he went to Warren, Ohio to Daria�s music school for 2 years, studying the piano and organ, but had few opportunities to play in latter life. Age 22 in 1880 census living in Carmi, Illinois as a student with mother and 2 siblings. Enumerated again, age 23 (father b NC, mother IL) in 1880 census boarding in Hanover, Jefferson County, IN as a student. Graduated from Hanover Presbyterian College, Indiana in 1881, first attending at age 17. The college was situated on the bluffs overlooking the Ohio River. Was excellent in arithmetic. Went boating on Ohio and then had to walk all the way home. At 26 in 1884 graduated from the Baptist Rochester Theological Seminary. Sailed to India in Oct 1884 as a missionary of the American Baptist Foreign Missionary Society and quickly acquired a good command of the Telegu language having charge of the Kurnool station not far from Madras. Returned to US in 1889 for health reasons. Spent time in Colorado to regain health. Bought 80 acre ranch Beaver Brook, near Canyon City, where he lived from 1891 to 1901. Living in Canon City, Colorado in 1899 according to Silas W Powell�s probate petition. Age 42 in 1900 census living on a farm, owned but mortgaged, in Upper Beaver Precinct in Colorado as a farmer. Returned to India in 1901 for the missionary society to be in charge of the station at Narsaravupet with over 10,000 Christians under his supervision. Touring occupied a great deal of his time from August to April being in charge of churches of the region, village schools, and ministering to those which had neither school or church. Established 32 churches that were self supporting with independent Indian pastors during his tour. Loved to sing and wrote several songs and poems. At a time when the word �relativity� was a new one to many people, he was ordering books from England on astrophysics to read during the hill season. Supervised the building of the Mary Kurtz Memorial Church. Had recurring bouts with malaria. Returned to the US in August 1923 for an operation, coming back to India 6 months later. Retired 1 Aug 1927. Lived at 3647 Grim St in San Diego. Age 70 in 1930 census living at 3647 Grim Ave, home owned worth $3500, San Diego, California with wife and German visitor 71-year-old John Dussnan, a widower. Revisited the Walnut Baptist Church on his trip east in Sep 1933. Age 82 in 1940 census living at 3647 Grim Ave in San Diego, CA with wife. Moved to 2328 E 6th St in National City before death. Died of pneumonia, senility, cerebral arteriosclerosis. In his last days he became almost blind and deaf, but he remained alert and bright to the very end, keenly interested in world events. His daughter, Kathryn, recounts that once when seeking to console him, he instantly cried out in triumph, �But I can think and pray!�
