Notes
a. Note:   SIX OF ONE AND HALF A DOZEN OF THE OTHER According to Irene (Lily's daughter), Lily once asked her mum when she was very ill in bed (in fact just before she died) 'Why did you put up with it all?' and she said 'I loved him. It wasn't all his fault. I had a quick temper. If I had been different, then half the fights would not have happened. It was six of one and half a dozen of the other'. That expression came to rattle Irene years later, when she went to see a medium. She said that she had her grandmother and grandfather there and that they were holding hands. She said 'He loved your grandmother very much'. Irene said 'He used to beat the life out of her' and the medium said "Your grandmother has just said 'It was six of one and half a dozen of the other'". Irene said that every hair on her body stood up on end and that she supposed that they really did love each other very much.
