a. Note:   John (Johannes) Hering was born a subject of King George III of England. The baptisms of John and his wife Elizabeth are entered in the record book of the Lutheran Congregation in Greenwich Township, now New Bethel Zion Church. The parents ofeach were the sponsors of each in turn, and the infants were cousins. At age 22, single, he served as recorded: "Payroll of Capt. Madery's Co, Militia of Berks Co., ordered by Wyoming Valley. Arrived at Fort Allen (now Carbon Co.) November 21,1787, at Wyoming November 26th. Discharged January 6, 1788. Pvt., 2 mo., 21 days."According to the U.S. Census and Berks Co. tax lists, John resided in Greenwich Twp. from 1790 to 1816. In Maxatawny Twp. from 1820 to 1824. In Kutztown from 1825 to 1829, and again in Greenwich Twp. form 1830 to 1834. He was married but not aland owner. He apparently was in the employ of land owners who at the time furnished their workers with a house and provisions as a major part of wages. John and Elizabeth undoubtably are buried at New Bethel Zion Church amoung the many earlyunmarked graves.
