She went to work for Burns and Potter, Stockbrokers. In 1940 she visited her cousins in Birmingham, AL and stayed there after accepting employment as operator of a payroll machine for Schloss-Sheffield Steel Co. In 1942 she moved to Longview, WA to work in the payroll department of Reynolds Metal Corp. She returned to Omaha in 1944 to work at Ft. Crook. On 22 August 1945 she was married to Lt. John Bentz. See his biography for an account of their moves over the next 35 years. After retirement in 1979, like her husband, she became involved in genealogy. For eight years she edited "The German Connection", the newsletter of the German Research Association. She published a book "If I Can You Can Decipher Germanic Records". For years prior to and after retirement she conducted workshops to train church-school teachers. For years she presented an annual program at the "Teachers" Faire" in San Francisco. She served as president of the Lutheran Circuit in San Diego. She had a new knee installed, a gall bladder removed, and on 8 January, 1992 she underwent a double mastectomy, followed by chemotherapy treatments and bone scans. In 1995 she and her husband celebrated of their Golden wedding anniversary." Wedding Announcement - "Miss Meyer Is Bride Mount Calvary Lutheran Church was the setting Wednesday for the marriage at 8 o'clock of Miss Edna Gertrude Meyer (above), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George A. Meyer, and Lieut. John Donald Bentz of Detroit, son of Mrs. Lizzie Bentz of Norfolk, Neb. The bride's gown was of ivory faille and marquisette trimmed with Brussels lace and she carried a bouquet of white gladioli. Miss Marie Meyer was maid of honor and S. Sgt. Victor J. Klein of Meadow Grove, Neb., was best man. Out-of-town guests included Mrs. William McGinty, Miss Leona Perske, Severn Gladem, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Jenny, all of Norfolk; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bauer of Scribner; Mrs. Agnes Stahl and Mr. and Mrs. Lorenz Stahl of Gretna; Mr. and Mrs. William Grunwaldt of Papillion. Lieutenant Bentz returned last week from England after 17 months' service with the Eighth Air Force. After completing 35 missions as a B-17 navigator he was with the Army Air Corps intelligence. Following a reception at the Meyer home, the couple left to spend two weeks at Mackinac Island in Michigan." Obituary - "BENTZ, EDNA M. May 30, 1918 - December 9, 1999 Edna M. Bentz, 81, of San Diego. Born Omaha, NE. A graduate of Benson High. Employed by: Burns and Potter, Omaha; In 1940 Schloss-Sheffield Steel Co., Birmingham, AL; Reynolds Metal, Longview, WA, in 1942; Fort Crook, Omaha 1944. Married A.F. Lt. John Bentz, Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, Omaha, Aug. 22, 1945. Lived in Detroit, Cleveland, Detroit, Cincinnati, Dubland (Dublin), CA, Grand Blanc, MI, Pleasanton, CA. Retired to San Diego in 1979. Editor 8 years "German Connection" for The German Research Association. Wrote an internationally popular book on deciphering German records. After several surgeries and health problems, she succumbed to renal failure. Survived by husband John, children, Karen, Leimen, ; Paul, Berkeley, CA; Roger, Springfield, OH; Tamara Bentz, San Diego; three grandchildren, one great-grandchild. A Memorial Service 7:00 PM Sunday, December 12, Christ the Cornerstone Lutheran Church, Mira Mesa. Donations suggested to Lutheran Hour, Lutheran World Relief, or VHL Family Alliance."
