They attended the public schools in Chandler through the eleventh grade. Their mother had died in 1915 so the heartbroken twins decided to go to California where some of their older brothers lived. When their older brothers enlisted, they soon did the same. Jay was stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco and in 1918 was sent to Ft. Meade, MD
