Note: The South Carolina counties ( post-Revolutionary) were formed 1785. Prior to that time the period 1780-1785 wills and estate administra- tions were filed in Camden, S. C. which was the county seat of Camden District in which old Craven County, from which Chester County was cut., was situated. It was for this reason that we find the early wills of Chester County, as well as the early estate settlements, filed in the present Kershaw Co., in Camden, S. C. I do not understand why there are no early deeds in Kershaw County. The deeds start in 1791 there and there are none earlier. I have been told these early records were burned..I have also been told the earliest books were stolen by the Yankees when they went through Camden, It is my belief that JAMES KELL, mentioned in the file below as adm. of MATTHEW KELL, was son of MATTHEW and was the JAMES KELL who died testate in Chester County 1813. *-------------* MATTHEW KELL MATTHEW KELL Estate File # 37-1319 Died intestate in.Camden District,S.C.
