My Mom reiterated to me yesterday that Elmer was the ugliest man she ever saw but I couldn't understand that because he was a hansome kid from the pictures I've seen. He may have been a victim of the fumes welders deal with. My parents both told me that Elmer and his wife Lizzy were more backwards in their ways, very stern, conservative, much like Elmer's father Harry. My Mom said the famous painting American Gothic was what they brought to mind for her. My father also said that Elmer tended to keep to himself and wasn't the friendliest of his uncles by a longshot. My Dad also said that to work at Dorr Oliver was considered a really good job in those parts. (1) 1. SOURCE: Interview with Art and Pat Brobst (my parents), Sun.
