Note: She first appears in the 1900 Census in Rush Twp with her parents, not yet a month old. I assume she was born in my great grandparent's home in Quakake as she appears as 0 months old in the 1900 census in their home. Mary Phoebe died of black diphtheria. This info was obtained from Jeanne Ritter Damon, who had an account of the story of Mary Phoebe retold by her mother Jean Brobst Ritter in a memory book for Jeanne's daughter. Jean Brobst Ritter recounts how her father Howard told her of the special affection he had for his mother Phoebe "Dora" Bachert Brobst and how Dora showed extra love and care toward all of her kids after losing her eldest Mary Phoebe, on Christmas Eve to black diphtheria. After that time, all of the children would receive their presents before Christmas Eve. I obtained a picture of a girl about four or five years old with other pictures circa abt. 1904-1914 of my g' grandfather's family I believe is a picture of her. I do believe that her mother Dora longed to have another girl after losing her, as you would often see some of her infant/toddler boys with long curled hair with feminine garb. I note though that it was not uncommon in those days for all infants/toddlers to wear something akin to a dress or gown during this time period. I was told by my Great Aunt Eleanora, Dora's daughter-in-law, and would-be sister-in-law of Mary Phoebe, that Dora had adopted another girl later; however, I found that this was not Dora but her in-laws (husband Harry's parents) who adopted Rebecca Lindenmuth. There is no evidence or testimony of an adopted girl in this family. She's apparently buried next to parents in Christ Church Cemetery in Rush Twp in Row 15, Southeast Section. Here' s her stone at bottom (Mary P) and those adjoining, possibly in same plot.
