Notes
a. Note:   Documentation for Elizabeth Allen as John's first wife. 1810 Burke County NC Census: oldest female: 16-25 DOB falls between 1785 & 1794 1820 Wayne County KY Census: oldest female: 26-44 DOB falls between 1776 & 1794...can't be earlier than 1785 according to last census. 1830 Roane County TN Census: oldest female: 40-49 DOB falls between 1781 & 1790, but since in the 1810 census the oldest her birthdate could have been was 1785, then her actual birthyear falls between 1785 and 1790. 1840 Roane County TN Census: oldest female: 40 -49 It's possible that this is an errror, but in the 1850 Roane County Census, Polly is listed as 56 years old and born in Tennessee. That fits with the age for the oldest female in the last census. Elizabeth was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church along with John....no year, but the membership is from 1822-1866 Shiloh Baptist Church Members 1822-1866 John DURHAM in the women's list.... Elizabeth DURHAM - 62 ( number 62 or age 62?) As far as I can tell, there were no Durhams in Roane County prior to the 1830 census. (There was an Elizabeth Durham Johnson who was born in 1760 and died in 1841 and is buried next to her husband, Edmund Johnson) Of course, there are no censuses prior to the 1830, but BY 1830 there are only 2 Durham families listed for the county and they are John and his son, Singleton. My strongest evidence that Elizabeth Allen was John's first wife is the following. John Allen (A) Durham was born by 1830. Following thru from him I found a marriage for him in 1) MARRIAGE RECORDS OF ROANE COUNTY, TENNESSEE, 1801-1855 by Willis Hutcherson and Marilyn McCluen published in 1973 on page 226: "John A Durham (109) Sur. (bond and license missing) 20 Dec. 1848 Anna Edgmond mar. (no return noted on book) Ref: MB 2, 115-116" 2) In the 1850 Roane County TN Census, John and Fannie are listed together. 3) John A. is assigned as one of the executors of his father's will and is mentioned as an heir. 4) He enlists with Capt. John Blyth's Company B, 5th Tenn. Cav. CSA in Kingston, Roane County, when the Civil War starts and 5) applies for his soldiers pension years later from Jackson County Tn. Jackson County Confederate Pension Applications NAME: Durham, John A. PENSION #: S12209 UNIT: 5th Cav. 6) I find him and Anna in the 1900 Jackson County Tn Census, DOB's are correct as well as their years of marriage. 7) Ten years later, he's widowed but listed in the 1910 Jackson County Census again. 8) He dies 4 years later and this is what is on his death certificate: Source: Tennessee Public Health Vital Records: Deaths, 1914 (Jackson County) Certificate Number: 454 Deceased Name: John A. Durham Date of Birth: 26 Jan 1829 Place of Birth: TN Date of Death: 15 Apr 1914 **********Father: John Durham************* Place of Birth: Unknown **********Mother: Elizabeth Allen*********** Place of Birth: Unknown Cemetery: Durham's Cemetery 9) Durham's Cemetery is in Roane County. 10) See 'notes' under John A Durham. There is a court record in which he was involved and within this record, his half brother, Lewis C Durham is mentioned. This was in Jackson County Tn. ********************************************************************************************************* 1/1/2010 A wonderful friend sent me land deeds from Wilkes/Burke County NC.
