Notes
a. Note:   Barb's note: The following isn't gospel. It was handed down orally by my father, Robert P. Durham to my mom, Palmina and somewhere along the line, I heard it. Records show that there is some merit to the story: Sometime in July or August of 1886, Anna Elizabeth (Lizzy) John's wife, somehow managed to cause an explosion that resulted in her death. It's assumed she was using kerosene to light a stove when it exploded. The rest is a copy of the records I have relating the outcome of the accident. ************************************************** STATE OF TENNESSEE FRANKLIN COUNTY The undersigned, a citizen of said state and county hereby states that John Durham is insane; his insanity is of less than two years duration and that his being at large is dangerous to the sat=fety of the community; that he is in needy circumstances and has legal settlement in the said county, and is a citizen of the State of Tennessee. These facts can be proved by Wm E Baker and Dr. J P Burten Dated this 20 day of Aug 1886 John M Baker I, J.P. Burton, a practiceing physician of Franklin County State of Tennessee, hereby certify that I have this day personally examined John Durham, alleged to be insane; and pronounce him so; he is 32 years of age, is the subject of no infectious disorder. The disease is of one month -years-(scratched out) duration he is not the subject of epilepsy, has attempted to commit violence upon the person of a young lady. I am satisfied that he is insane, on competent medical testmony; that he is a fit subject to be sent to the state hospital for the insane, to undergo treatment therein, as an object of bounty of the state. I am further satisfied that his being at large is injurious to himself and disadvantageous to the community. Anderton Register[barbara.FTW] ************************************************** His granddaughter, Allie, says he was a hot-headed Baptist and she believes he may have even tried preaching at one time. Lucy Anderson, a niece of Anna Elizabeth's said they belonged to the Church of Christ. According to the First Reformed Church's records John Durham died in 1932. (This church is in Belvidere, Tenn. Is very early records are in German according to a family member) He is buried in that church 's cemetery and has a simple tombstone.[Loveless.FTW] On February 4, 1875 he married Elizabeth Glaus, a Swiss girl. The family farmed. Five children, 2 boys and 3 girls were born to this couple. In 1886 Anna Elizabeth was killed and instead of keeping the chldren and rearing them, John allowed them to be divided between his parents and his in-laws. In the 1920's he came to Stratford,OK. to stay for awhile. His three sons lived near there. While there he stayed with his sons John and Jess. The men didn't want him to stay with W.R. and his wife Minnie. They said he had no business being around women. Letter from Doris Bennett, grandaughter of Henry Glaus. Ida Knapper, daughter of Anna Durham Zimmerman told Doris about Anna E. Glaus Durham's husband. She said he didn't go to church which was near by although he lived with Annie and John Zimmerman. At this time they lived in Belvidere near Ida Knapper whose homes were on the same road as the church and nearby. He was a very quite man and he died in Annie's home in 1932. He is buried in the same row where Anna Elizabeth's grave is located. Anna Elizabeth does not have a marker. Ida said Annie was so hurt over what he had done to her sister Minnie ( Ida only this year told her daughter about this) Doris checked the church records and found their names on the plat. Anna Elizabeth if Doris could remember correctly his grave was about fourth down from Anna's in the same row. 10/7/84
