Notes
a. Note:   Thanks to Wayne Nash for the following: Civil War Pension Papers show that John M. Durham and Rachel Pierson were married on 17 Nov. 1853. Names included on these pages are: Sarah J. Mc Querter (formerly Sarah J. Rose-Durham) and Charlotte Box, (who was John's mother, Charlotte Morphew/Murphy Durham.) **************************************************** 1860 Census Union Twp Marshfield, Webster MO, p 825 HH 836, Fam. 832 John Durham 35 Day Laborer Tennessee Mary 30 Tennessee Thomas 1 Missouri ************************************************* Durham, John Union Webster County Battalion, Missouri Home Guard I found two records for John Durham. I believe that he enlisted for homeguards first and then joined the regular army a few months later. Both records are in the scrapbook. He enlisted on July 20, 1862 in Marshfield, Missouri. He mustered in July 30, 1862. He died at Lake Springs of disease on April 29, 1863. A month before his brother, James. Both brothers enlisted with the same unit, but served in different companies. ***************************************************** Home Guards * Raised in June-December 1861. The men were to be armed by the federal government, but would only be paid if called to active duty. Several thousand were called to three months active duty during Union General Nathaniel Lyon's advance on Springfield, Missouri in late summer 1861. * At its height, the Home Guard organization consisted overall of approximately 19,000 men who served in approximately 240 companies during the war. * Men who served in the Home Guards were eligible to receive postwar federal military pensions and benefits if the units they served in had been recognized by the Hawkins Taylor Commission as having been "called out or accepted by proper authority." The Commission bestowed that distinction upon six regiments, 22 battalions, and 49 independent companies of Home Guards. * Men who had served in the Home Guards in units recognized by the Hawkins Taylor Commission were authorized in 1886 by the Secretary of War to receive certificates of honorable discharge from military service from the War Department. ***************************************************** 1870 Census Marshfield, Ozark, Webster, MO, p. 284 ln. 3, HH 21, Fam. 21 Graves, Allen Graves, Rachel (their three children) Durham, Thomas, 11, b.
