Notes
a. Note:   Obituary from Washington Post: Helen Simon Beery, 70, an Air Force spouse and volunteer, died September 2, 2005 at INOVA Loudoun Hospital in Lansdowne, Virginia. She had complications of auto-immune disease. Mrs. Beery, a cheerful club leader, tole artist and seamstress, was much appreciated for her service in wives clubs and social organizations at bases across the United States and in France and Germany. When she became a permanent resident of Northern Virginia in 1971, she became an Arlington Lady, representing the Chief of Staff at military funerals. She also joined the Womens Committee for the National Symphony and the national Air Force Officers Wives Club. Carrying the trademark bright umbrella, she worked as a tour guide for Guide Service of Washington. Again, when the family transferred to Hanscom AFB in Boston, she affiliated with Michaud Travel as a tour escort on bus excursions. Mrs. Beery was born in Kansas City, Missouri, in the Coleman Highlands Historic District. She attended Westport High School, then William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri. She and her future husband met when they took jobs on the same day at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. In an early Air Force assignment, she marshaled military wives and children to cope with the hardships of building up community facilities at Laon Air Base, northern France. She accompanied her husband and raised the children in some 20 homes over his 24-year career, telling others that military friendships and challenges were ample reward for the problems of moving her family. While her husband was in Vietnam, she was a stalwart member of the waiting wives group that tended to special needs and domestic emergencies in Montgomery, Alabama. She enjoyed music and the theater and was a member of McLean Bible Church. Moving to Loudoun County in 2000, she became an enthusiastic participant in Lansdownes Leisure World clubs and activities. Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Colonel Raymond E. Beery of Lansdowne; two sons, Josef Beery of Charlottesville, Nicholas Beery of Carrboro, North Carolina; a daughter, Susan Buck of Liberal, Kansas; and six grandchildren. Memorial Service at Blue Ridge, to be announced.
