Note: This was the matriarch of our family. The oldest of 16 children, she helped in the upbringing of the family. After the death of her parents, she held the family together. She held the highest respect and love from all of ther family and everyone she ever met.
She married to get out of the country and for a better life. The first marriage did not work out, since It was to an older man. Although he provided well the affection wasn't there to maintain a good union.
She later met and fell madly in love with Guillermo Martinez who came from an upper crust family. He fell in love with her too, but his womanizing and his family tore the relationship apart. They had a daughter, Rosa Aida. When my mother died, Guillermo came to the funeral. My mother's last wish to him was for him to toss two roses into the sea. A white one for the purity of her love and a red one for the love child that they produced. He complied with this request.
Arcadia was known by her nickname 'Cayita' to her family and friends. She was a seemstress by trade and was well known for her talent. She created everything from gowns to men's shirts. She was sought out by celebrities all over the island and later by well to do business people in New York. However, she never really made what her talent commanded for the quality of work she produced. She could reproduce any gown or dress from a magazine as well as design her own creations.
