Notes
a. Note:   His record of military service in the Civil War is confusing. In the military schedule of the 1890 census he says that he was in Co. G of
the 53rd Indiana Infantry. In the 1895 Iowa census he says that he
served in Co. G, Reg. 35, Indiana, Infantry. However, his military
records show that he was paid to be a substitute for Thomas J. Mouncy
in Co. I or J of the 23rd Regiment of the Indiana Infantry. One
document says he never reported. The military records give a physical
description of him at age 34 as being 5 feet 10 inches in height with
light hair, fair complexion, and hazel eyes.
Excerpted from History of Benton County, Iowa: Thomas and Julia Ann
(Leonard) Cox, (now) from Grand Junction, Iowa. Thomas Cox was born
in Delaware, and as a young man removed to Ohio, where he married and
then settled in Wells county, Indiana, his home until 1877. He
followed farming in Benton county, Iowa, several years and then
located in Greene county, Iowa, which has been his home for seventeen
years, in February, 1908, in his eightieth year. His wife was born
near Chillicothe, Ohio, and is now about seventy-three years of age.
They were parents of eight children, three of whom were born in Ohio
and five in Indiana. All resided in Benton county some time, and all
 survive.
According to the 1900 U.S. census, they were the parents of 10
children, 8 living. The names of those who died young aren't known.
From the 1895 Nebraska census, agricultural schedule: Thomas owned
his farm which consisted of 24 acres tilled, 130 acres unimproved. The
value of the farm was $1000, value of farm machinery $100, value of
livestock $324. There were 20 acres of grasslands, 3 milk cows, 4
other cattle, with 3 calves dropped and 1 purchased, 6 swine, 25
 chickens.
He lived the last 17 years of his life (1892-1909) in and around Grand
 Junction, Iowa.
b. Note:   He left no will and no probate was conducted.
