a. Note:   BIOGRAPHY/EVENTS: Whitney Julius Thompson was born Julius Whitney Thompson on May 7, 1898 in Durham, CT, the second child of Reuben Thompson and Mabel Clark. They resided in the South End of Durham, CT. (He had one older brother Reuben who died at birth on February 25, 1897). Whitney had 9 siblings, however, his children were only told about his 4 brothers that lived to adulthood. His first name came from his mother's father and his middle name came from his father's brother. His grandparents were Warren Alvin and Myrta Amanda (Hall) Thompson and Whitney P. and Mary Coe (Camp) Clark. Myrta Hall Thompson died 4 months before he was born. He considered himself 100% Swamp Yankee nationality. May 23, 1900 - sister (unnamed) born who died at birth. In the 1900 Census, he is listed as Whitney R. Thompson, the only child living. July 8, 1901 - brother (Ken) born Jan. 6, 1903 - brother (Carlton) born. He died less than 1 month later on February 10, 1903. July 31, 1904 - brother (Warren) born January 11, 1906 - brother (unnamed) born/died. May 26, 1907 - grandfather, Warren Alvin Thompson, died in Durham, CT January 10, 1908 - brother (Clarence) born. January 2, 1909 - grandmother, Mary Coe Camp, died in Durham, CT March 13, 1909 - sister (Elizabeth) born. She died 5 months later on August 22, 1909 from whooping cough. In the 1910 census, he was 11 years old, living with parents and brothers Ken, Warren and Clarence. January 6, 1911 - brother (Elmer) born. February 9, 1916 - grandfather, Whitney P. Clark, died in Durham, CT (Civil War Veteran) When he was a youngster, he was awarded a tin cup for hockey playing. (This tin cup was on display at the Durham Library in the 1970's) On September 12, 1918, he registered for WWI under the name Whitney Julius Thompson. He listed his occupation as Tin Smith working at the Merriam Manufacturing Co., in Durham. He was listed as Medium in Height, Medium Build, Dark Brown Eyes and Black Hair. Family legend states that he reported to Ft. Devin, MA, but did not fight in combat. In 1920 (census) he was living with his uncle Julius Davis Thompson and aunt Clara (Murry) at 121 Meriden Road, Durham, CT. A Gladys Barley, age 18, was also living in the household. Around 1923/1924 he was working on the road from Durham to Guilford (Rt.77) when he met his wife, Mildred Elizabeth Norton. He lived at Trowbridge Farm on Moose Hill Road, Guilford, CT. Mildred's father (Owen) was working there too. They were married on June 28, 1924 at the First Congregational Church, Guilford, CT. The marriage certificate states he was of Guilford. They were married by Frederic E. Snow, Pastor. Witnesses were Pheobe Harris and Raymond Norton (or Newton). Whitney and Mildred both descend from John Mack (1653-1721), making them 8th cousins (which I do not believe they were aware of). At the time of their marriage, they lived at 10/12 Driveway (now 28) Driveway, Guilford, CT He and his wife had 6 children. Their first child, daughter Jean, was born on March 12, 1925 at the Guilford Sanitarium on Whitfield St.. Whitney was listed as a factory worker. (lived at 9/10 Driveway, Guilford). (Family story)When he heard she was born, he ran all the way from the farm to the Sanitarium via the railroad tracks. On January 26, 1926, his mother died in Middletown, CT from pneumonia. On April 17, 1927, daughter Kathryn Edna (later changed to Catherine Elizabeth) was born at the Guilford Sanitarium. Whitney was listed as a dairyman. On December 7, 1929, son Whitney Julius Jr. was born at 126 Water Street, Guilford. In 1930 Census, he is listed as a truck driver for a trucking company - Water Street, Guilford. abt. 1931/32 - moved to Long Hill Road, Guilford, CT. On June 7, 1933 - daughter Doreen Edna was born on High Street, East Haven, CT. Worked part-time for a dairy company. He also trapped muskrats and mink. He would skin them, dry skins on board, sold them to Kramer's furs, Orange St,, New Haven. He also dug out cellar (new house construction) - he was bull doze operator, steam roller. He was considered by many as an expert bull doze operator. Lived at Tyler Street, East Haven, CT (abt. 1934/1935) Lived at 63? Hemingway Ave, East Haven, CT (abt 1936/37) On December 14, 1938 - son Donald Norton was born at 93 Hemingway Avenue, East Haven, CT. Whitney was a Roller-Operator, W.P.A., but unemployed at time of birth. He was actually up in VT getting a load of Christmas trees to sell. On October 28, 1941 - son Duane Davis was born (Yale New Haven) Hospital, living at 93 Hemingway Ave., East Haven, CT 1942-1943 East Haven City Directory - listed at 93 Hemingway Avenue Part-time he dug clams with his son (Whitney) and sold them to residences. 1946 - moved to Guilford - 20 Water Street, Guilford, CT. Skinned muskrats and mink and sold them to Fred Mousch at Mousch's Barber shop on Whitfield St (now Guilford Chocolatier next to Guilford Food Center) 1956 - moved to 82 State Street, Guilford, CT where he lived until his death. May 7, 1971 - died at Middlesex Hospital, Middletown, CT from bronco-pneumonia, emphysema, ASHD, left side heart failure, age 73. Buried at Alderbrook Cemetery. Thompson Sr., husband of Mildred Norton Thompson of 82 State Street, died in Middlesex Memorial Hospital Friday. He was 73. Mr. Thompson was born May 7, 1898, son of the late Reuben and Mabel Clark Thompson in Durham. A retired construction worker, Mr. Thompson had lived in Guilford for the past 45 years. Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Mrs. Leon (Jean) Tomlinson of Orange and Mrs. Thomas (Doreen) Capezzone of Guilford; three sons, Whitney J. Thompson Jr., Donald N. Thompson and Duane D. Thompson, all of Guilford; and seven grandchildren. His funeral will be held at the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church St, Monday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Hal Helms, pastor preciding.
