He was the third child of William Benjamin Norton and Charlotte Louisa Beckwith. He was the grandson of Joseph Norton, Susan Ogden Morgan, Lorenzo Fairbanks Beckwith and Charlotte Clark. His father and maternal grandfather were in the Civil War, and later were farmers. In 1880 he was living at (264) Church Street with his parents, two older sisters (Gertrude and Rosa) and his paternal grandmother Susan (Morgan) Norton (1). His brother, Randall (18) was living elsewhere. On January 24, 1895, his grandmother, Susan Norton, died at (264) Church Street, Guilford, CT. His maternal grandparents, were from East Lyme (now Niantic) and they died in 1893 and 1898 and are buried in the Union Cemetery in East Lyme (Niantic), CT. On June 14, 1900, Owen, an express driver, was living with the family of Wilford Dudley, 179 Broad Street, Guilford, CT. His parents were still living at (264) Church Street, and next door was the Wise family. (2) On November 14, 1900, he married Mary Davis Wise (3) and they had 6 children, 3 girls and 3 boys, each set containing 1 blonde, 1 brunette, 1 red haired child. In 1910 he was a local express man, living with his wife and three children; Edna (8), Mildred (6), and William (4). Two doors away was his cousin, Elias P. Bates, editor of the local paper. (Park St, Guilford, CT) (4) On September 12, 1918, he registered for World War I. He is listed 39 years old, a farmer employed by Rollin S. Woodruff. (5) He is listed as short and slender, but his daughter said he was 5� 9" tall with beautiful blue eyes and brown hair. In 1920, Owen and his family were (renting) living at 12 Driveway, Guilford, CT. He was 40 years old and a farmer. His in-laws, Edward and Mary Wise were living next door at 10 Driveway. Five of their six children were living with them; Mildred (16), William (13), Kenneth (8), Elliot (7) and E.Margorie (3). (6) He worked at Trowbridge Farm on Moose Hill Road (Guilford) and Rollwood Farm on Stone House Lane (Guilford). In September 1922, his parents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary In March of 1923, within two weeks, both his parent died. At some point, he was gored by a bull at Rollwood Farm. He died on May 9, 1929 at his home on Driveway, Guilford, CT due to cerebral embolism and carcinoma of the jaw. He was buried in Alderbrook Cemetery, Guilford, CT. (7) Wife: MARY DAVIS WISE MARY DAVIS WISE was born January 31, 1881 in 167 East 87th St, New York, NY, and died July 08, 1959 in 107 Howe St, New Haven, New Haven, CT. She was a housewife and a private nurse (Bushnell family in New Haven). She was 5 feet 2 inches tall, with brown hair and blue eyes. She enjoyed stamp collecting. Her nickname was May. Her father was born in Lynn, MA and her mother was born in Toronto, Canada to Scottish immigrants. Through her father�s side, she descends from royalty via her 7th great grandmother, Alice Freeman. She was also a cousin of Roger Babson, founder of Babson College. Her father was an RR Engineer. In 1900, before her marriage, she was listed as a servant, living at 32 Boston Street with the family of Harry and Nellie Dudley. After her husband�s death, she is listed in the 1930 Census, as living at 100 Whitfield Street, Guilford, CT with children Ken (19), Elliot (17) and Marjorie (13). On July 8, 1959, she died at 107 Howe Street, New Haven, CT from Atherosclerotic heart disease, age 78. Her funeral was at the Leete Funeral Home and she is buried in Alderbrook Cemetery, next to her husband. Children Owen William Norton and Mary Davis Wise: 1. EDNA WILLAMENA NORTON Edna was born January 04, 1902 in Guilford, CT, and died in New Haven, CT. She met (1) RALPH A. MARSH. She married (2) HARRY BENNETT October 29, 1922 in Guilford, CT. He was born 1890 in Waco, TX. In 1920, she was living with her family and employed as a corset maker in a factory. On May 1, 1921, she gave birth to a premature baby girl who died 5 hours later(8). The father of that baby was listed as Ralph A. Marsh, b. NY. She later married Harry Bennet, who was a Chauffer. He had his leg amputated. Edna was a housewife, tall and had red hair, and never had any other children. She lived on Clinton Ave, New Haven, CT and John St. (Foxon), East Haven, CT. She was buried on May 4, 1971 in Alderbrook Cemetery, Guilford, CT (Lot 325 - no marker) (9) 2. MILDRED ELIZABETH NORTON She was born November 11, 1903 in Guilford, CT, and died July 06, 1995 in Nursing Home Clinton, CT, age 92. She married WHITNEY JULIUS THOMPSON June 28, 1924 in 1st Congregational Church, Guilford, CT, son of REUBEN THOMPSON and MABEL CLARK. He was born May 07, 1898 in Durham, CT, and died May 07, 1971 in Middlesex Hospital, Middletown, CT, age 73. See chapter on Mildred Elizabeth Norton for further information. 3. WILLIAM HAROLD NORTON was born March 12, 1906 in Guilford, CT, and died Bef. 1991 in New Haven, CT. He married RUTH COOK STEVENS January 26, 1930 in Guilford, CT. She was born February 15, 1910, and died February 26, 2005 in Guilford, CT. She was the daughter of Mary Brown and Theodore Decatur Stevens. His nickname was Bill and he had sandy blonde hair, hazel eyes and was short. He was a truck driver for Deforest and Hotchkiss, East River, Madison, CT He and Ruth had two sons: i. Elwood Evan Norton, b. Feb. 4, 1932, Guilford. (graduated Guilford High in 1950)- lives New Mexico. ii, William (Billy) Harold Norton, lives in St. Croix 4. KENNETH EDWIN NORTON Ken was born February 19, 1911 in Guilford, CT, and died November 12, 1959 in Fair Haven, New Haven, CT. He married ELEANOR CAPOBIANCO June 21, 1941 in New Haven, CT. She was born May 04, 1909 in New Haven, CT, and died May 10, 2010. She was the daughter of Albina Scandone and Nicholas Capobianco. Ken had dark hair and was of medium height. In 1930, he was a salesman at a grocery store. He worked for the Railway Express, New Haven, CT. He served in WWII. Ken and Eleanor had one daughter: i. Eleanor (called "Bunny") who married Joseph Celotto. 5. ELLIOT ROBERT NORTON He was born May 15, 1912 in Guilford, CT, and died December 19, 1990 in Branford, CT. He married (1) INES AUGUSTA MORGAN November 28, 1936 in Guilford, CT. She was born December 18, 1917 in Guilford, New Haven, CT. She was the daughter of Edwin L. Morgan and Beatrice Gilette. He married (2) EVELYN ROBINSON. She died Bef. December 19, 1990. Elliot�s nickname was "Red" because of his red hair. In the 1930�s, he was a mason�s helper. Later he worked for for Ramset, a division of Olin Industries, until his retirement in 1975. He lived at Berger Place, Short Beach, Branford, CT where he died in 1990 from a brief illness. EDITH MARGERY NORTON She was born May 09, 1916 in Guilford, CT, and died December 26, 2002 in Guilford, CT. She married (1) RAYMOND WILLIAM FOWLER. He was born May 23, 1910 in New Haven, CT, and died October 12, 1983 in West Haven, CT. She married (2) ROBERT QUINN. He was born December 19, 1916, and died January 21, 1986 in East Haven, CT. He was the son of Joseph Quinn and Josephine Jones. Edith�s nickname was Margie. She was five feet two inches tall, had blue eyes, brown hair and very long nails. She was probably named after her aunt, Edith Wise. She loved dolls, music boxes and knickknacks. Her birth record does not list what street the family was living on when she was born. Norton Owen William Norton, 50, died Thursday, May 9, at his home in the Driveway, having been in in failing health for nearly a year. He had been employed at Rollwood Farm for several years and was highly esteemed by all. He was born in Guilford on Jan. 20, 1879, a son of William B. Norton of Guilford and his wife, Lottie Beckwith, formerly of Niantic, whose home was in upper Church street. He leaves Mrs. Norton and six sons and daughters, William, Kenneth, Elliot and Miss Marjorie Norton, and Mrs. Whitney Thompson, of Guilford, and Mrs. Harry Bennett of New Haven; also two sisters and one brother, Mrs. Roy Wingood and Randall Norton of Guilford, and Mrs. Charles Sharples of Hartford. The funeral was held Saturday noon at the home, the Rev. William C.H. Moe, officiating. The bearers were B. M. Finnegan, Benjamin E. Howarth, Ernest Benton, Edgar Wilcox.
