Note: "Al" as he was usually called by family and friends, was the fourth child of William Garner and Anna Dubuque; he was born on June 21, 1918 at home at 165 East Adams in Detroit. Just 19 days prior to his birth the family suffered a tragedy when their 18 month old daughter, Marie Anna, fell off the porch while learning to walk and died as a result of a skull fracture. The family suffered another loss when his mother lost her hearing during the birth process with Albert and never regained her hearing during the remainder of her life.
