From a retirement announcement in a Buffalo, NY newspaper (presumably the Courier-Express) from about 1950:
"C-E Employee of Composing Room Retires Now that he's "only a hop, skip, and a jump from being 72," John Leonard Neumann, veteran hand man of the Courier-Express composing room retired yesterday with the satisfaction of a job well done.
Neumann, who lives at 16 Rose St., first fingered type back in 1892 in a German weekly. After a year there, he became a job compositor for the George M. Hausauer Co. and went back to the Review, a morning market paper, in 1901. The Review went bankrupt, he recalls, on May 3, 1903.
Since then he has worked in the composing room of The Enquirer, The Star, and The Courier-Express.
Neumann says he has been associated with "a wonderful gang" in the composing room of the C-E which he rates as "A-1."
He said he foresees a continued bright future for newspapers, asserting he is convinced newspaper advertising is most effective. Newspapers, he said, have the reputation for reliability.
He retires as a proofreader although most of his time on the C-E was spent on the correction bank. In retirement, he plans to "just putter around" and spend more time with relatives.
He will be 72 on Christmas Day."
26 November 2005 - I cannot locate John Neumann in the draft registration card records of Erie Co., NY from 1918. All men age 18-46 were required to register regardless of citizenship. He would have been 42 at the time, so maybe his birth date is earlier than we think it is.
