Notes
a. Note:   William Goodman was born, in Sullivan County, Tennessee - located in the northeast corner of the state. Margaret Malone was also from the same county. I have nothing to tell why they may have chosen to move across the entire state to Fayette County, Tennessee. I did get a copy of their marriage license from Sullivan County. When they first appeared on the census in Fayette County, the information listed showed that they had had 12 children with 10 surviving in 1900 which to me means they must have moved with all these children! I have only been able to identify 9 of the 10 surviving children and hope to find the other name at some point. But if this is a daughter that possibly had already married, the chances are slim. William had several brothers and sisters. I have only found information about Louisa. These were not well-off people so there are no deeds or land records to track them. They generally worked on other peoples' farms. My Mom remembers, though, that her grandfather built a house in Vildo, TN - it once was a active community with a railroad. The house was next to the store and was still standing when I visited a few years ago, but is in bad shape. Mom remembers riding the train from Whiteville to Vildo - a short distance these days. The train is long gone from Whiteville and Vildo. Margaret (Maggie) was living in 1920 in the Vildo, TN area. She died in 1926 when my Mom was about seven years old. She is the only one of her grandparents that Mom ever met. She remembers going to Maggie's house and that her Grandmother Maggie gave her a small dish with a cover that had a chicken on it. We tried to locate a cemetery where William and Maggie were buried in but without any luck. But, in 2003, I got a copy of Maggie's death certificate which states she was buried at Mt. Tabor, near Whiteville. My Mom had no idea that her grandmother was buried there! I know from many visits to Mt. Tabor that there is no marker for her. I feel that they just didn't have markers - maybe no one could afford one. I wish I knew more about them - their lives. It mystifies me that they moved so far away from where their families had apparently lived for quite sometime. _________________________________________________________________ 1860 Census information for Sullivan County, District 5, Tennessee shows William age 16, living at home. 1870 Census information for Sullivan County, District 5, Blountville P.O., TN, shows William and Margaret. No children. 1880 Census information for Sullivan County, TN, District 5 (Blountville Post Office Area, shows William and Margaret married, with the following children: Mary J (10), David O. (7) Will R. (5), James T. (3) and John V. (9 mos). Since there isn't a census for 1890 I don't know when they actually arrived in Fayette County or if they came directly to Fayette County. HOWEVER, I did locate William Goodman on the 1891 Male Voters list for Fayette County, District 15. Since this is the district where they lived in 1900 I believe this is the same person. In 1900 they were living in Fayette County, Tennessee, District 15. Their children John, Julia, Henry, Thurman and Arthur lived with them. This record shows they had 12 children with 10 surviving at the time of this census. I have only been able to identify 9 of the 10 surviving children. 5 children were living at home with them; Mary J. was married and lived at the next household (George Warf); David was married; Robert was married and James T. was married. That accounts for the 9 -- who is the 10th?? The 2 that died will probably never be identified. According to the 1910 Federal Census information for Hardeman County, Tennessee, partial District 2 that included Whiteville, they lived off the Bolivar-Brownsville Road. At that time, they had been married for 41 years. Both were born in Tennessee. 1860 information shows that Williams mother was born in Virginia. It also shows that they had given birth to 12 children but at the time of the census only 8 were living. David O. died sometime between the 1900-1910 census as he was listed on the 1900 and not on the 1910. (Albert Pittman, age 17, showed as hired man.) Discrepancies in age: on 1900 census William's age is shown as 56; on the 1910 census his age is shown as 62--on 1900 census Margaret is shown as age 53; on 1910 census (Maggie) is shown as age 57. William died prior to the 1920 Census. Maggie is shown on Hardeman County District 2, as a widow. _________________________ 10/2003: Until now, did not know where either were buried. I have just received a copy of Maggie Goodman's death certificate which shows she was buried at Mt. Tabor Cemetery (as were many of their children). There is no marker. No one in my family knew she was buried there. Probably William was also buried here; I am requesting a copy of his death certificate. Note: William's death certificate could not be located. _________________________
