Note: Charlie, the first of Effie and Elisha's seven children, was said to be a beautiful child with a sweet nature. He was a great delight to his young parents and to all who knew him. Although Charlie's life began with great promise, it ended much too soon. Charlie became ill with one of the typical diseases of the day. In desperation, Elisha stayed by Charlie's side, hoping and praying that his little boy would recover, but that was not to be. As two-year-old Charlie took his last breath, Elisha watched in amazement as an angel of the Lord appeared and took Charlie's spirit with him. Why Elisha was allowed to see his dear son's soul departing his tiny frame is a question only God can answer. Charlie is buried at the Manning Cemetery located two miles north of Seals junkyard in Howards Quarter, Claiborne Co., TN. His name is inscribed as Charlie E. Reed on his gravestone. He is buried beside his uncle, Lester E. Reed, who died in infancy. The two boys are often mistakenly thought to be brothers by researchers.
