Note: In 1920, Isie, age 5, born in Tennessee, was living with her parents in District 4, Claiborne Co., TN. In 1930, Icie, age 15, was living with her family in District 4, Quarter Precinct, Claiborne County; she attended school that year. Icie went to Grissom Island School in Caney Valley and completed the first through the eighth grades. The family lived too far away from the high school in Tazewell so she was not able to go any further with her education. Icie met Ira Burke when he worked for one of her neighbors; she married him before her 20th birthday. They lived in Howards Quarter in Claiborne County for the first few years before finally buying a farm in Goin which was also in Claiborne County. Besides keeping busy on the farm and raising her family, Icie also ran a general store. In 1955, Icie and Ira brought her grandmother, Mildred Reed, into their home where they cared for her until her death on May 10th of that year. Icie was an outgoing woman who loved to laugh. Her eyes would sparkle and shine when something tickled her. She was kindhearted and quick to help others. Whenever anyone would come for a visit, she was always hospitable and willing to meet every need. Her niece arrived one time with her young family around midnight after traveling several hours to get there; Icie had a full meal on the table and urged everyone to eat heartily. Icie was a wealth of information when it came to the family, and she would entertain young relatives for hours with stories about the "old days." She could remember vividly not only details from her own childhood but things that she'd been told about her ancestors as if she had lived their lives as well. Just as Icie had cared for her grandmother, she also took care of her parents in their last years. She and Ira sold their farm in Goin and moved to Tazewell to live with Effie after Elisha died. Icie continued living in the house on Tazewell Rd. until her death at the age of 93. She is buried with Ira at Fairview Cemetery in Tazewell, Claiborne Co., TN.
