Notes
a. Note:   Ruth Harris, my paternal grandmother, had gray hair by the time I knew her. Upon her death, her daughter was cleaning out her dresser drawers and found an envelope of long, dark brown hair that was my grandmother's from many years previous. She had saved it that long time. As a child, I spent many nights with her on a large farm that is still intact in the year 2004. I learned to milk "Goldie" the jersey cow, picked dandelion greens for salad, ate macaroni noodles with only butter and salt on them, and learned how to prime the big iron pump in the kitchen in order to get water. There was no plumbing in the house, and we had to get water from the pump and walk out the back door and down the path half way to the barn to use the outhouse. There were Sears and Roebuck catalogs in there, rolls of toilet paper that were soft from being outside the house, and two holes in a board to sit on. The holes had beveled edges and you just could not see down into that pit to see what people had left before you. There were always wasp nests in the outhouse, which scared me to death and I hated going in there. At night we would use a chamber pot and grandma would empty it the next day out the back door. One time, a big sow got her snout stuck between the wooden pickets and grandma had to go out and smack that big, wet snout with the butt of a garden hoe. That sow backed out real fast and I had a new respect for my grandmother after that.
