Note: Raymond Martin was called "Abe" by family and friends (but always Raymond by his wife Jeannine). He was a US Army paratrooper and gunner in World War II and worked at the Flexible Company for 42 years, as well as did some farming. In WWII he earned the following medals: . I remember he did woodworking as a hobby and gave me a pair of candlesticks he had made. Raymond's wife Jeannine began the genealogy research on the Martins, Harris's and Rizors. She continues to collect extensive information and while obtaining proof of early generations, has compiled an impressive collection of information on the generations of the last several decades. Early in her marriage, wife Jeannine (Aunt Jean to us) worked as a seamstress for the "Wedding Bell and Leedy Clothing" stores in Loudonville, Ohio, for many years. One of my favorite memories of her is when she sewed me a gold corduroy jumper to match the red one my cousin (their daughter) Pam had. Pam was one year older than me and as a child I thought she knew everything in the whole world. Very active members of Nashville United Methodist Church, a Knox Twp. trustee, coached girls softball and Little League, was a 1944 graduate of Nashville High School, a member Hanover Lodge 115 F&AM, and worked 42 years for the Flxible Company. Raymond was a US Army Veteran of WWII serving in the 501st paratroopers infantry regiment as a mortar gunner in the 101st Airborne Division, grade PFC. Obituary: Big Prairie: Raymond "Abe" Martin, 72, 13450 County Road 280, died Monday evening, August 18, at Joel Pomerene Hospital in Millersburg, after an eight-month illness. Services will be Friday at 2pm at Byerly-Lindsey Funeral Home in Loudonville, with the Rev. Thomas Wallace officiating. Burial will be at Nashville Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted. He was born Feb.11, 1925 in Holmes County to Harley and Ruth (Harris) Martin and married Jeannine Hay on Aug. 29, 1951. She survives. He had made his home in the Nashville area all his life and was a 1944 graduate of Nashville High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in the 101st Airborne division. He had worked at the Flxible Co. in Loudonville for 42 years, retiring in 1988 and had served many terms as a Knox Twp. Trustee, He had been a coach of Nashville Little League, Farm Team, and Girls Softball teams. He was a member of the Nashville United Methodist Church and Hanover Lodge 115 F&AM. He enjoyed woodworking. Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter Pamela and son-in-law Glen McVay of Killbuck and sons Scott Martin of Nashville and Randolph Martin of Big Prairie; two grandsons; and sisters , Wanda Armstrong of Millersburg and Hazel Storch of Mansfield. Brothers Ralph and Barney Martin and a sister, Florence Walkerow, died previously.
