Notes
a. Note:   ISAAC CALVIN ADAMS 1811-1880 Isaac Calvin Adams was born in 1811 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. He was the middle child of seven children and was said to have red hair. Around 1813, his Father (Isaac) and Mother (Rebecca), and their five children migrated through the Cumberland Gap (Gateway to the West) to Floyd County, Kentucky and settled on the Licking River in what is now Morgan County, Kentucky. His father, Isaac, purchased 50 acres in 1820 on the Licking River and then an additional 75 adjacent acres in 1828. They lived near Isaac Calvin's Uncle William Adams who purchased 600 acres on the Licking River in 1835. Isaac must have been close to his older brother Jesse. They ended up marrying sisters from the Samuel Wallace McGuire family of Morgan, Kentucky and later moved their families to Missouri and lived close to each other. On 23 Feb 1828, 20 year old Jesse married 17 year old Nancy McGuire. Then on 10 Aug 1833, Isaac Calvin (22) married 21 year old Catherine Rebecca McGuire sister of Nancy (See Tab #4 for documentation). It was said that the mother of Nancy and Catherine (Janet Ferguson) was an Indian. In 1835 (or 36), Isaac Calvin and Catherine had their first child, Samuel C. Adams. While in Morgan County they had two more children: John M. (Born 1836) and Louanza Jane (Born 1838). In April of 1841, Isaac Calvin's father (Isaac) died in Morgan County and Isaac Calvin and his wife Catherine moved to Pettis County, Missouri. Their fourth child, son Mathew, was born there on 13 Feb 1842. They lived in Petis County until about 1845, when they moved to Swan Township in Taney County, Missouri, and resided next to brother, Jesse, and his wife Nancy (sister to Catherine). Nancy died in about 1848, as Jesse is shown as a widower with seven children (ages 2 through 18) in the 1850 Census (See C-1). Isaac Calvin's fifth child, William Martin Adams, was born 24 Feb 1847 in Taney County, Missouri, and their last child Elizabeth was born there in 1848. The entire family is shown living together in Swan Township in the 1850 Census (See C-1) with children ages 2 through 15. Isaac Calvin's occupation is listed as "Farmer" as is his eldest son Samuel, age 15. Five years later, Samuel married a Sioux Indian girl named "Sarena". Also, their next son, John, and daughter, Louanza, both marry and leave home about 1857. It is about this time that Isaac Calvin and his family moved to Newton County, Arkansas. They are shown as a family of five with children Mathew (18), William (13) and Elizabeth (11) in the 1860 Census (See C-2) living in Boston Mountain Township, Newton County, Arkansas. Isaac Calvin's occupation is listed as Blacksmith. Blacksmith was a well thought of profession on the frontier in 1860. Many farmers picked up blacksmithing as part of farming; however, each community relied on the skills of their local smiths. A blacksmith's forge and working area was often a place where the local farmers gathered for conversation and for updates on recent happenings. It is here where the residents of Newton County probably gathered to discuss the developments of the upcoming Civil War. See copy of "A Buffalo River Story" (FHL # (976.716 H2h) next page. There is no record of Isaac Calvin Adams serving in the Civil War, although it is documented that two of his sons (Samuel & Mathew) served as Union soldiers. Isaac Calvin would have been just over 50 at the start of the War. Isaac Calvin and Catherine next appear in the 1870 Census (See C-4) residing in Pleasant Hill Township of Newton County, Arkansas. Their ages are 55 & 52, which is not accurate. His occupation is Farmer. However, this Census reveals something puzzling: living with him and Catherine is the Sioux Indian Sarena (Samuel's first wife) at age 32 and their six children: William (14), Mary (12), Mathew (10), Eli (7), John (4), Elizabeth (2). But where was Samuel C. Adams; the son, husband, and father? Although we will not know for sure, Samuel was, in fact, probably residing there in Pleasant Hill with his parents and his family, but was not willing to reveal that to the census taker at the time. Two years prior he had shot and killed a man in Missouri and fled with his family to Arkansas and was in fact hiding from the officials. This will be further explained in Samuel's biographical sketch. Isaac Calvin Adams does not appear in the 1880 Federal Census and it is assumed that he died at his home in Pleasant Hill sometime prior to 1880. Catherine Adams died sometime after 1880.
