Note: Around 1840 James C. Durnnian arrived in Saint John, New Brunswick from County Tyrone via a port in Northern Ireland, likely Londonderry or Ballyshannon. Saint John city records of 1845 record James as a "freeman of the city" as all persons over 21 years of age were required to purchase before they could engage in any kind of business or occupation. He was a labourer. James C. Durnnian died on 22 Dec 1847 at the age of 32 leaving a wife and 5 children on Britain Street, Saint John. . Four of the children were probably: 1.tabJohn 2.tabJames William 3.tabIsabella J. 4.tabRobert 5.tab? After the death of James, his wife and children fell on hard times. By 1850 at least 3 of the children (James, Robert and Isabella) were in the Saint John City Almshouse, and his wife was in the Saint John Penitentiary. On 15 June 1850 James and Robert were discharged from the Almshouse into the care of Charles Secord of the parish of Sussex, Kings County, NB. In the census of 1851 James was listed as a servant in the household of Charles Secord. Robert was re-admitted as a runaway to the Almshouse on 2 November 1852. On 10 January 1851 Isabella (aged 11) was taken on a trial basis to Norton, Kings Co. No further records mention Robert or Isabella.
