Notes
a. Note:   Herbert Jones, a good friend of Bernard, became the children's legal guardian. Bernard's will directed that his estate to be divided equally amongst his five children, each to receive his or her share at the age of 21. The estate was worth $2,000 after expenses, a considerable amount in 1922. The children were adopted or taken in by siblings of their maternal grandmother, Ermina Matilda Northrup nee Knollin. Clara Ermina was adopted by Mrs Annie (Bertie) Harmer (nee Knollin). She dropped Durnnian and took Harmer. James went to live with Wilmot and Jeanie Knollin but Jeanie found a boy too difficult and brought him back the next summer from Worcester. James went to live with Nell and Ernest Erb. Irvine went to live with Harry and Ella Marchbank (nee Knollin).Violet A. (Edna) was adopted by Wilmot and Jean Knollin. She dropped Violet and went by Edna. She took Durnnian as her middle name then Knollin. They lived in Worcester, Mass. The children did receive their inheritance. In 1930 when Clara was 18 years old, she received her portion of her father's estate from Herbert Jones, with which she attend Teachers' College (Normal School) in Fredericton. James received his share with which it is assumed he bought land in the Kingston Peninsula. Upon this land, he established the 'Durnnian Poultry Farm', which was passed on to his second son, Stanley and is currently owned and managed by his grandchildren, Kim Kelly nee Durnnian and Mark Durnnian.

Note:   (Medical):After his wife's death Bernard had the care of the five children along with the difficulty of finding and keeping a suitable housekeeper. The deaths of both Edna and Ivan were hard on Bernard, but the final blow, according to Clara Dunlap nee Durnnian, was the death of his favourite horse. After that, he seemed to give up. Worn down, he came down with pneumonia, dying of it in 1922.
