Notes
a. Note:   Cyrus is the oldest known Cartwright that we have detailed information. We cur rently do not have much detail on his father George nor his mother Judith.
Cyrus is also the Father of all of the New Castle and Ellwood City Cartwrig hts. His son George M. is the Father of the New Castle Cartwrights and his other son David is the Father of the Ellwood City Cartwrights. No other mal e children sired children.
We know his father is George because in Civil War pension application filed by wife Sarah, following his death, one Mary Cartwri ght Law attests to being his sister. On her death certificate her father is li sted as George Cartwright, born in England.
We believe that his mother is Ju dith for two reasons. Arthur Cartwright believed so and probably received this information on conversation with at least one of Cyruss children, his grand a unt Judy for one. Secondly in the Civil War pension application, a Judith atte sts to the marriage of Cyrus and Sarah. Unfortunately the the testimony does n ot list a relationship, only an age of 69.
Cyrus was born in Centre County ( per Civil War Regiment Roster) during the westward migration of his family. Th ey finally settled in Lawrence County near New Castle.
Cyrus married Sarah Womer on Feb 13 1856 in New Castle, PA by Esq. Thompson, Justice of the Peace, a nd witnessed by Sarah's older brother John and one Grace Miller.
As of 187 2 they were living as tenants on the Whitaker property, about 4 miles from New Castle, as Elizabeth Whitaker attested to in Sarah's Civil War pension applicat ion of 1878. Elizabeth was an attendant to the birthing of Cyrus and Sarah's y oungest daughter and child, Mary Etta, where Cyrus's sister Mary Cartwright Law (whom the child was named after) was also present.
Cyrus made his living as an oar miner, as listed in the 1860 Federal Census.
Cyrus was in the Civil W ar for only about 5 months in 1862-63. He contracted chronic diarrhea and was discharged in early 1863. He never recovered from the illness and died about 12 years later, in 1875, at the age of 42. He is buried in "Covenanter's" Church yard, later to be known as Neshannock United Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Fai rground Rd., Hickory Twp., in an unmarked grave. Arthur Cartwright requested a government marker in 1976.
  Civil War Record:
Cyrus enrolled as Pvt. Compan y H, 134th Regiment Infantry of the Pennsylvania Volunteers in New Castle, Lawr ence County, PA. at age 30, on Aug 9 1862. He is listed as 5'10" fair complexio n and blue eyes.
He may have enlisted with his wife's brother John Womer, al so age 30 and his sister Mary's husband William Law. These names are listed in the regiment roster but no verification if they were these persons.
Cyrus mustered into service in Harrisburg on Aug 20, 1862 into Company H, 134th Regiment, under Captain David McCready. The 134th is moved first to Washington D.C. and attached to the 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, 5th Army Corps, Army of the Pot omac and placed under command of Lt. Col. Edward O'Brien of Lawrence County, et al. Camp is set at Falmouth, Va. in early November. This regiment reports to the 2nd battle of Bull Run, where the fighting had ended but did serve in the battle of Fredricksburg, VA December 12-15 1862.
Cyrus contracts chronic dia rrhea and is honorably discharged on surgeon's certificate of disability by ord er of General Meade, Falmouth Va. Jan 26 1863. Note that within the 134th Regiment, Co. H of a total of 87 men, 17 men were lost to disease as compared to 7 killed and 9 wounded. Company H was a 9 month commission and mustered out in Ma y of 1863.
