Recently, I discovered your data on the family of John and Bernhardina Peiters (Vanderslice) Yohn and their 14 (?) children. For many years I have been tracing the descendants of Melchior Kuney who died in Perry County, Pennsylvania, in 1806. Melchior arrived in Philadelphia with his father, Benjamin Cuny, on the ship Christian in 1749. The family settled first in Berks County, then later in what is now Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. By 1789, Melchior and his seven sons (Frederick, Peter, Samuel, John, Daniel, Benjamin, and Henry) were living in Toboyne Township, Perry County. Peter Kuney (most of his descendants spelled the named "Cooney") was born in 1769 in Berks County, died in April, 1827 in Perry County, and married Susanna Brown. They had a total of 11 children, 8 daughters and 3 sons, all of whom lived to adulthood, married, and with the exception of two of the daughters, I have documented many of their children's descendants. One of these daughters whose descendants are unknown to me, Margaret Elisabeth Cooney, was born December 30, 1793 in Perry County, and married, according to an old ancestry chart of which I just received a photocopy, John Yohn. This is all I know about Margaret Elisabeth Cooney/Kuney. Following the usual migration patterns, I began searching for evidence of Yohn family members in places I might expect to find them. I located many Yohns, of course, in Perry County, but what is most interesting, I found two important references your John Yohn, born September 24, 1786, son of John and Bernhardina Peiters (Vanderslice) Yohn. First I located the burial of a John Yohn in Clay Cemetery, Berreman Township, Jo Daviess County, Illinois. The tombstone states that he died February 28, 1871, age 84 years, 5 months, placing his date of birth in September, 1786. He certainly must be the son of your John and Bernhardina Peiters (Vanderslice) Yohn. Another reference I have to him is from a "Buffalo Valley" and Union County, Pennsylvania, necrology list that mentions a John Yohn who died February 17, 1871 at the age of 85 years. To have two John Yohns die in the same month of the same year and both in their 85th year seems more than a coincidence to me. What is more, I think it unlikely that two John Yohns would be found in Perry County this early on and in the same generation as Margaret Elisabeth Cooney. I'm certain you can understand why I'm almost ready to say that Margaret Elisabeth was in fact John Yohn's wife, but unfortunately have no direct proof. Have you any evidence of the identity of John Yohn's (born September 24, 1786) spouse? Do you know if he had any children? The John Yohn in Jo Daviess County, Illinois, definitely had at least one son, Peter Yohn, born November 24, 1811 in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, and I have a number of descendants of his already in hand (the prevalence of Peter as a first name in this family may be significant). Another likely son of his is John Yohn, born c. 1820 in Pennsylvania, died about 1848 in Jo Daviess County. I have several descendants of his too, but not a trace of the mother of either Peter or John Yohn. Can we collaborate on this problem? I'd be very glad to hear from you. Please contact me any time.
