Notes
a. Note:   Obituary of Mary J. Darcy, the Red Wing Republican, January 6, 1938: " MARY J. DARCY, ONCE RESIDENT HERE, DIES JANUARY 1 IN DAKOTA - Mary J. Darcy, former resident of this community passed away January 1, 1938, at the home of her daughter Mrs. Leo TeVogt of Devils Lake, N.D. Her death was the result of a stroke. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 10 a.m. from St. Mary's Catholic church at Bellechester, with Rev. Father Techamn officiating. Interment was made in St. Mary's cemetery, Bellechester. Mary McBride was born at Belvidere February 26, 1867, and spent her young womanhood there. In October, 1890, she was united in marriage to Hugh Darcy of Chester. They resided there for a short time and from there went to Mazeppa where they lived several years. Twenty five years ago they moved to Amenia, N.D., where Mr. Darcy was engaged in farming. From there they moved to Detroit Lakes where Mr. Darcy was employed by the Bogg Implement factory. They resided in that city until Mr. Darcy's death June 8, 1937. She was a woman for whom no sacrifice was too great to make for her family, church, and friends. She will be remembered for her splendid character. Surviving Mrs. Darcy are her five children, Mrs. Julia Martin, Plainview, Mrs. Art Ebentier, Carrington, N.D., Martin Darcy, New York City, Mrs. Leo TeVogt, Devils Lake, N.D., and Miss Genevieve Darcy, Detroit Lakes. Three sisters, Mrs. Kate McDonough, Fargo, N.D., Mrs. Anna McKenzie, Lake City, Mrs. Agnes McGovern, Redwood Falls, and one brother, William McBride of Lake City, also survive. " The death record on file with the North Dakota State Health Department shows that Mary Jane Darcey died January 1, 1938. The doctor who signed the death certificate examined the body at 1 A.M. on January 1, 1938 and consequently stated January 1, 1938 as the date of death. The family has always contended that she died on December 31, 1937. They say that Mary Jane and her husband, Hugh, were born in the same year and died in the same year. This author has a copy of the State Certificate of Death. He also has a photocopy of a telegram from Leo TeVogt, son-in law of Mary Jane, which is dated January 1, 1938 at Devils Lake, ND and addressed to Mrs. J. C. Fleck, 303 5th St. North, Fargo, ND which says "Mother Darcy passed away 11:45 tonight. Funeral arrangements not complete. Signed, Leo" . Leo TeVogt was a telegraph operator for the Soo Line Railroad in Devils Lake at the time and sent the telegram shortly after the death of Mary Jane. She died at the TeVogt home in the presence of the family. This would seem to substantiate the claim that Mary Jane died in 1937.
