Notes
a. Note:   In a letter to the author on September 1, 1981, Bernadette Miller of Kelona, B.C., Canada, told of a conversation she had with her uncle Clement Peters, son of Theodor and Gertrude Peters. "Theodor's father was the owner of 40 acres of land which was inherited by the eldest son. He paid about 1500 marks to each of the other seven children (5 boys and 2 girls). Since Theodor was not the eldest son he had to either rent land or work in the iron mines. The land he was able to rent was not good land, making him a poor living. His family was growing in size, so he had to do something else. He hated working in a mine, so immigration to America became a beautiful answer. Their little girl died just as they were to board the boat. They left her with the relatives to bury, as missing the boat would have delayed their departure for at least a year. The family settled in Minnesota. They found that the land in Minnesota was already all owned and so they were renting again. Then land in Canada opened up for homesteading and in November 1903 they packed up and moved to a new country again. At last they had their own land at St. Benedict, Sask."
