a. Note:   The assignment of Andrew and Samuel, Jr. to this family is provisional and is based on a letter to John McBride from his brother, Daniel, asking if John had any news from home (Ireland) and asking what Andrew and Samuel were doing. The original letter is in the possession of Mary Ellen Slattery of Gretna, Nebraska. The author has a photocopy of the letter. It reads: "Salisbury January 6th 1862 Dear Brother, I write these few lines to let you know I and wife and child is well as this leaves me at present hoping that these few lines will find you and wife in good helth. I named her after my mother Jane plese let me know when you had a letter from home or how the are all and what Andrew and Samuel doing also let me know if you hard anything about Mary McElrevy being in New York our cusin. Let me know when you herd any acount from William and whare he is. Let me know how Mary is let me know how the times is out west or what the folks think about the war.
