Notes
a. Note:   While no record of the actual birth place of Mary Jane McBride has been found it is likely that she was born in Trenton Twp., Pierce County, Wisconsin. The 1870 Federal Population Census for the Town of Belvidere, Goodhue County, Minnesota, page 13, dwelling no. 80, family no. 83, shows Mary J. McBride living with her grandparents, Daniel and Harriet Mallan, and gives her place of birth as Wisconsin. On July 12, 1865, William McBride purchased a tract of land in Pierce County, Wisconsin described as being in Sec. 33, Twp. 25, Range 18, which is in Trenton Twp. and states that William McBride is "of Trenton, Pierce County, Wisconsin." The 1867 Real Estate Assessment Roll for the Town of Trenton shows William McBride as being assessed for S.E.1/4 of N.W.1/4 ,Lot No. 2 in Sec. 33, Town 25, Range 18.Pierce County is located across the Mississippi River from Red Wing Minnesota, and it is at the Church of St. Joseph in Red Wing where the baptism of Mary Jane McBride is recorded as Born February 26, 1867, Baptized March 18, 1867. Jennie Dorsey (Mary Jane McBride Darcy) is named as an heir of Daniel Mallan in the final settlement of his estate, because her mother, Julia Ann Mallan McBride, was already dead and Mary Jane was entitled to her mother's share of the estate. The death record on file with the North Dakota State Health Department shows that Mary Jane Darcey died January 1, 1938. The doctor who signed the death certificate examined the body at 1 A.M. on January 1, 1938 and consequently stated January 1, 1938 as the date of death. The family has always contended that she died on December 31, 1937. They say that Mary Jane and her husband, Hugh, were born in the same year and died in the same year. This author has a copy of the State Certificate of Death. He also has a photocopy of a telegram from Leo TeVogt, son-in law of Mary Jane, which is dated January 1, 1938 at Devils Lake, ND and addressed to Mrs. J. C. Fleck, 303 5th St. North, Fargo, ND which says "Mother Darcy passed away 11:45 tonight. Funeral arrangements not complete. Signed, Leo" . Leo TeVogt was a telegraph operator for the Soo Line Railroad in Devils Lake at the time and sent the telegram shortly after the death of Mary Jane. She died at the TeVogt home in the presence of the family. This would seem to substantiate the claim that Mary Jane died in 1937.
