Education, went to 1st grade in Tiffin,(OH), then to St. Michaels School in Toledo, then finished grade school in Kansas, and went as far as 10th grade in High School, moved back to Toledo and that's all the schooling I had. I then went to work as an apprentice in a high fashion Dressmakers shop.
PER JANNIE CANNON: Bette told me her mother, Anna, had gone to school in Portugal for several years. Since her dad didn't want her to lose her English Anna was sent to a school in Portugal.
Per Bette Love: Anna's first communion was June 26, 1904, age 12, at St. Michael's Church, Toledo, as noted in prayer book.
In Anna's own hand writting in Portugese is this children's story and saying with translation by Jecel Assumpcao of Brazil:
O sol e o vento
Una manha disputavam o sol e o vento qual dos doistinha mais forca.
Concordaram em que seria tido por mais valente aquelle que primeiro firsees tirar o capote a um viajante, que por acaso passave entas ao pe d'elles. Derepente comecou o vento a enfurecer-se, vindo em seu auxilio a chuva e a saraiva. Todos junotos acoitavam o pobre viajante; porem elle, praguejando e tremendo, cada vez se embrulhava mais no capote, e la foi se guindo o seu caminho, como poude.
Veiu cepoise a vez do sol. Este fer dardejar os seus raios ao longe pelos cumes dos montes, e d'ahi a pouco sobre todos os objectos em roda do viajante. O ceo e a terra parreciam mais risonhos, e no ar sentiase um calor agradavel.
O viajante nao poude aturar o capote, deitou o fora dos hombros, e emqunato elle tomava ofreseo a sombra de uma arvore, o sol cantava victoria. Coon docura e bom todo conseguimos melhor o que pretendemos, doque com vilencia e asperesa.
The Sun and the Wind
One morning, the sun and the wind were arguing about which of them was the strongest. They agreed that whoever first made a traveller, who happened to be passing beneath them, remove his coat would be declared the toughest.
Suddenly the wind became fierce, and was joined by the rain and sleet. All together they pounded the poor traveller; but he, swearing and trembling, ever more tightly wrapped his coat about him and went on his way as best he could.
Then came the sun's turn. It shot its rays far away on the mountain tops and soon on everything around the traveller. Heaven and earth seemed to smile and a pleasant warmth was in the air. The traveller could no longer endure his coat and removed it from his shoulders. And while he rested in the shade of a tree, the sun was enjoying his victory. With sweetness and goodness we can reach far more of what we want than with violence and harshness.

MEMORIES: SECOND AND THIRD-HAND BY BETTE LOVE
One evening after dinner when Mother, my sister, Marge, and myself were still at the dinner table lingering over our cup of tea, we told her we both had been invited to two formal dances. Our discussion was about what we would wear, especially since it would involve the same dance partner and heaven forbid, you couldn't wear the same dress just a couple of weeks apart. So, my mother volunteered to make us something remembering her young apprenticeship at the up-scale dress shop making her a very valued seamstress for the well-to-do ladies in the big city. It was planned and we selected our patterns, fabrics, threads, zippers and plenty of tulle. The Singer machine, manually powered by pumping your legs, was placed in the dining room beneath two windows - lots of light needed for these fine stitches that were going to appear on these seams. Marge chose powder blue and I chose white because they were Christmas dances. Not only did Mother say she would do two dresses but she would make them so that at one dance they would be of taffeta, long and flowing, but at the second dance she would make a separate over-dress of each color using the very beautiful tulle. They truly were lovely and the tulle changed the whole appearance of our gowns. Such a good idea!. Thank you for the beautiful dresses, Mother, but you should have seen the elegant black velveteen long hooded coat she made to go over our special dresses, each lined with matching dress fabrics, only my white lined coat had a Christmas red velveteen lined hood. The work she did was heroic and such a joy to wear only to be compensated by the fact that my daughter, Lisa, when 17, and my granddaughter, Lindsay, the same age as her mother and grandmother, wore this same coat to their winter formals. I still have the coat. I just can't part with it.
FROM WILLIAM L. MEYER, JR. 28 June 2002: I read with interest what must have been a favorite story to my mother when she was a child about the SUN AND THE WIND, written by her in Portugal. The moral of the story was that with sweetness and goodness one can achieve far more of what we want than with harshness and violence. That seems to have personified my mother's lifestyle and I think that rubbed off on her by Gram and Gramp Thebes.
