Note: Will of Thomas Griggs of Cavendish, yeoman. 25 October 1634. Commends sinful soul to God. I give Elizabeth my loving wife my mansion house and all my free and copyhold houses and lands in Cavendish for life. She must pay £40 4 years after my decease to my daughter Anne for her portion in south porch of Cavendish church. The rest of my children, who have not received their portions before my death, have benefit of survivorship. If my wife dies within 4 years, my son William is to pay Anne £40 a year after wife's decease. I give the rest of my children portions as follows: to William £40 within 2 years of my wife's death; to Margaret £40 within 6 years of my decease; to Temperance an annuity of £5 for life; £50 to Hugh within 9 years of my decease; to Humphrey £40, of which £10 owed to me by Robert Sandall of Cavendish is to be paid when he is 24; until then the increase of £10 to be paid to Thomas Sandall of Cavendish to teach Humphrey to comb and learn his trade until he is 24; my wife or her exor to pay him £30 11 years after my decease. I give my son George £50 to be paid when he is 21, and £40 to my daughter Martha when 24, both to .be paid by my wife. I give my grandson Thomas Sandall £5 when 21. I give my son Thomas 40s to be paid by my wife 6 months after my death. If my wife dies before she has paid my legacies, my son William is to pay them by selling all my land and tenements in Cavendish within a year of her decease. Legatees have benefit of survivorship, but, if they are married, their children are to benefit. I make my wife sole ex’trix and give her all my goods and household stuff, milk beasts, horses, carts, implements of husbandry and credits. If the sale of my land raises more money than is needed to pay legacies, surplus is to be divided among those of my children who are then unmarried. To wife Elizabeth mansion house and all houses, lands, etc., which be situate in Cavendishe, during the term of her natural life. If said wife shall live four years after my decease she shall pay to my daughter Anne Griggs £40. If said wife die within four years after my decease, son William Griggs to pay within one year the said sum to said daughter Anne. To every of the rest of my children, namely, to Willliam Griggs £40; to daughter Margaret £40; to daughter Temperance an annuity of £5 during her natural life; to son Heughe Griggs £50. Unto son Humfrey Griggs the some of £40 of lawfull money of England whearof that £10 which Robert Sandall of Cavendishe oweth unto me shallbe as parte thereof, paid unto him when he shall attaine unto his full age of foure and twentie yeares, the use and encrease of wch £10 is to be paid unto Thomas Sandall of the saide towne to learne and teache the said Humfrey to combe and to learne his trade untill the said Humfrey shall Accomplishe his full age of fower and twentie yeres; and said wyfe shall paie vntoyor said son Humfrey the £30 residue of the said £40 wthin eleven yeares next after my decease yf shee shall so longe lyve. To son George Griggs £50 at twenty-one years. To daughter Martha £40 at age of twenty-four years. To grandchild Thomas Sandall £5 at age of twenty-one years. To son Thomas Grigges 40s.
