"John Near b. abt 1790 Vermont : d. 15 Dec 1866 Stanbridge (gs), bur Plas Cem. Dutch St., Bedford, Que. (by George Slack), six miles from the American border. This cemetery is on the old Near farm owned by Ellis Jones. It was sold to Jonas G. Jones in 1858. John M. (1) 3 Jan 1813 Hannah Clapper, dau. Adam and Margaret Clapper, "both of minor age, b publication of banns, in the presence of his mother, Christina Niere and her father" (folio 21 Anglican Church of Philipsburg). She d. 7 April 1831, bur Plas Cem. John m. (2) Elizabeth Primmerman, dau Peter Bachus; d. 18 Feb 1850 aged 60 (gs), bur Plas Cem. by Rev. James Jones, Anglican Ch. Stanbridge. John Near of Stanbridge, Canada East, Lower Canada (Que.) and formerly of Richmond, Canada West petitioned 16 March 1842 for two hundred acres as a son of Loyalist, the late John Neere of Fredericksburg. (Group IL3 vol. 388 -- Ottawa Archives) Adam Clapper had lots 13 and 17, range 6. He came to Quebec in 1800. It is said Clapper pumped the Atlantic ocean three times through his leaky ship from London to New York. He believed very strongly in spooks and witches."
