a. Note:   . Box 12 Folder 8 Adams, Don, biographical info. Don Hugo Adams and I are 2nd cousins, once removed. In Folder 8, there is a manuscript written by John Hugo Adams Jr., "Some Outline of Family Adams," 1979. The portion about his father are below. "Don Hugo Adams (1893 - 1974) Dad was born at Plumfield, Pennfield Township, Mich., the second son (and child) of John and Grace, on 2/21/1893. His birth certificate shows he was named "Donald" (source of both given names is unknown), although he always told me as a 'Junion' that it was just 'Don.' When the family moved to Beesville, he helped build grandfather's house there, graduated as valedictorian from Beeville High School, went to San Marcos Normal and briefly to the University of Texas; got a teaching certificate he never used. And all through this period he worked with his brother selling Adams extracts for his father and working his way through school. About this time (1911), he worked down on the Houston ship channel for the Army Engineers and a dredging company until 1914. It was during this period that he met mother at 'Stella's Houseparty.' In 1915 he got a job with Peden Iron and Steel Co. of Houston, got married in Hitchcock 10/25/1916. He was offered the San Antonio office, and with military sales during WWI was Peden's top salesman. In 1920 he opened Stewart Warner service station in San Antonio and Houston, with Archie Marchand, a sort of engineering genius, as a paratner. But for some reasons they sold out and Dad went back to Peden in 1923, working with them as a salesman until the depression in 1931 when he was let out as a 'junior' employee. He later worked for Peden for short terms. In 1931, he opened up the Houston territory for Adams Extract Co., and held it until his retirement in 1948. Mother and Dad lived in and owned many homes, but they moved from Houston to LaPorte in 1934, until retirement and travel gave them itchy feet and they finally bought out in Kerrville. They were living in a retirement home there when Mother died in 1973, and Dad moved to another retirement home in Galveston. He died there 12/17/1974, and his ashes are buried near Mom's in the Liverpool Cemetery. Dad was very active in his churches, first as one of the lay leaders in Houston's big, central First Christian Church, and then down at LaPorte's Community Church, where he was Sunday School superintendent, teacher, etc. He and mother were fanatical fishermen, and in our youths, Godfrey and I were constantly with them on camping and fishing trips. Son Don Jr. was born 12/2/1918 at San Antonio, and Godfrey Spaulding 9/7/1922 at Houston." ____________ box folder 12 8 Adams, Don, biographical info 9 Adams, Don, correspondence, 1936, 1937-1939, 1949, 1964, 1965-1969 10 Adams, Don, Grace Spaulding John writings about (includes "Second Cousin") 11 Adams, Don, newsclippings 12 Adams, Don, photos Subseries K: Helim George Spaulding, 1913-1943, and n.d.
