a. Note:   He made two trips to America. His first trip was on August 26, 1907 arriving at Ellis Island on the ship "Vaderland" sailing from Antwerp, Belgium. He is listed on the ship manifest as "Istvan Gonerol" from "Esku, Hungr". His ethnicity is listed as "Hungary, Magyar", he is 23 years old and is single. It is unknown as to when he returned to Hungary, however on May 29, 1912 he made a return trip to America, arriving at Ellis Island on the ship "Potsdam" which sailed from Rotterdam, Holland. He is listed on the ship manifest as "Istvan Gonerol" from "Felsooszko", Hungary. His ethnicity is listed as "Hungary, Magyar", he is 28 years old and is listed as married. Family reports do not indicate that he was previously married before his marriage to Borbala Szebenyi in 1914 so this may be an error. After this trip he settled in America only returning to Hungary in 1949 for a 3 month visit with his brother Janos. Listed on the 1915 NJ State Census for Borough of South River, Middlesex County, Supervisors District South River, ED#1 Sheet No. 23, line 44 age 31, occupation porcelain maker. Birth Oct. 1883. Name is spelled "Stephen Ganzi". Wife Borbala is listed as "Barbara", age 21, son Frank Ganzi age 6 months, born in New Jersey. ---------- Listed on the 1920 Federal Census for Middlesex Borough, Middlesex Co., New Jersey, Enumeration District #10, page 9 age 37. Name is spelled "Stefan Guernsey". Wife Borbala (Barbara) is listed as "Mary" age 25, children are Mary age 4, Joseph age 3, Irene age 2, and Frank age 2 months. Emigrated in 1913 to the United States from Hungary according to census record. Occupation is machinist. Address is Marshall Street (currently Marshall Place), Middlesex Boro, New Jersey. Son Frank (probably Ferenc named after Istvan's father) is not listed. Istvan lost the house on North Avenue in Dunellen due to the Depression because he lost his job and could not pay the remaining $300.00 balance of the mortgage. Shortly afterward Istvan and Borbala received a money settlement from the accident that killed their oldest son Joseph and were able to buy a lot and build a house on Dayton Avenue, Middlesex, Middlesex Co., New Jersey which was the family home until shortly after Istvan died in December 1967 after which time it was sold.
