Note of Interest... 4 out of 7 living children of Ada Routly & William Bill Phillips got into the tourist business... Early 1920's Phil or OC with the help of his brother's Roy & Cecil built a resort that he called "Driftwood Lodge" located off Hwy 35 between Rosedale & Coboconk on the east side of Balsam Lake. Located at 44 degrees 37' 35.78" N, 78 degrees 48' 23.45" W. After the lodge was finished he went to Toronto, there he would buy a whole floor or more of furniture in some of the best hotels in downtown to furnish the dinning room & the rest of the lodge every few years. He was a real wheeler dealer. He was one of the first tourist operators in Ontario to go to a sportsman's shows in the states & advertise his resort. Offering the American Plan to the very well to do families. (America Plan was one where the guest paid a lump sum for each person (child or adult) in the party for a week or more. It included a room, or sweat, a in dinning room full course breakfast, lunch, snacks during the afternoon, supper & a snack before bed time.) Soon his brother's Roy & Cecil & sister's Bea & Monetta each owned their own resorts. 1939-26 June 1947 Bea built The Chateau Riveras, Coboconk, Ont."Gayest Spot in Town" (when gay meant FUN. Taken off the back of a post card). Located on the south side of the Gull River & up on the hill, over looking the town, on Rock St.. Address was Fenelon Falls, Ontario, so located some wheres between Coboconk & Rosedale on Hwy 35. 1939 Cecil helped his brother Roy build his resort called The Royal Cabin Lodge on the east side of Balsam Lake. Sold in 1968. Still in operation 2011, known as ”The Royal Resort Ltd.”-- “Royal Lodge” , Rosedale. Located at 44 degrees 36' 12.98" N, 78 degrees 47' 33.06" W 1940 Cecil with his brother Roy's help build his resort calling it “Cedar Villa Lodge” on the east side of Balsam Lake, just north of Roy's resort called The Royal Lodge. Sold in mid 1960's & built a home nearer to Hwy 35 on Royal Cedar Rd.. Cedar Villa Lodge was located near 44 degrees 36' 12.98" N, 78 degrees 47' 36.45" W Both used the same road off of Hwy 35, now called Royal Cedar Rd. Both where very up beat lodges. Only the wealthy could afford to go there. 1944 their sister Monetta & James Outram brought property up on Grace Lake, Wilberforce, Haliburton Co. & built a resort they called Birch Villa Lodge catering to the American Plan as well. They sold in 1989 & brought a home in Lindsay. Located at 45 degrees 03' 38.76" N, 78 degrees 13' 20.43" W All offering the American Plan to the very well to do families. (America Plan was one where the guest paid a lump sum for each person (child or adult) in the party for a week or more. It included a room, or sweat, a in dinning room full course breakfast, lunch, snacks during the afternoon, supper & a snack before bed time.) Now back to Driftwood Lodge... CO built one of the largest cement docks or wafts on Balsam lake. By all accounts it ran out into the lake well over 100 feet & was over 20 feet wide. Not long after it was built the spring ice hit it in away that it got under it & pushed it all the way up onto the shore & the lawn of the resort. It took weeks to smash it apart & hall it away. He then built a bigger one with a sloping front, so as to let the ice slide up on it & over it. It was big enough to have two dump trucks parked side by side & still have room. 1939 the resort was sued by an American lady whole fell off the dock & broke her leg badly. She would most likely have won the lawsuit except CO had the money to hire a top notch lawyer from Toronto who investigated the accident. The lawyer found out that this family had stayed there the summer before, that winter they had hatched a plan where they would again return for a week vacation, but this time the lady would trip & fall off the dock badly hurting herself. Then they would sue for a very large sum of money. Instead they where charged for planning this caper. After the 2nd World War he expanded into building cottages to rent to individual families. If you would take out a 5 year lease. He would have his brother's Roy & Cecil build it to your plans, right down to the colour of the exterior & interior walls etc, including furnishing it the way you want it. Over the next few years they built quite a few, all on the lake front. CO calling it “Driftwood Village”. Early 1960's CO Phillips sold the lodge. The American's were at war in Vietnam & couldn't afford to come to Ontario for vacations. And started to sell off each of the cottages on a lake front lots. In the end he sold them all. By this time he was a wealthy man. He was well known in the resort business all over Southern Central Ontario for his money making ideas. He brought Juniper Island, out in Balsam Lake, not far from his mainland property. Where he sold cottage lots all around it. After retiring his son Donald Phillips carried on. Location 44 degrees 37' 18.13" N, 78 degrees 48' 19.57" W After retiring he had his brothers build him a home just in off the highway on the north side of Driftwood Village Road where they lived when they weren’t traveling. They spent a lot of time in Florida. Located at 44 degrees 37' 46.11" N, 78 degrees 47' 35.76" W Their children....
