Was a School teacher all of his life. He was a Public School Inspector in the late 20's early 30's. Traveled by horse in warmer months, & by snow skis (he made his own) in the winter months. He relied on people with kids in school to feed him, and put him up at night. The schools where about 4 miles apart. And he tried to visit them twice a year. He signed all of the graduating classes of grade 8's, and gave test to each child in all classes to see if the teacher was teaching the proper subjects & the right way to the rest of the Ontario schools. His area was the Southern part of Haliburton County, an all of Northern part of Peterborough County. He was Principal of The Peterborough Norm School (which in 1953-54 became known as The Peterborough Teacher's College) until his retirement. We all dreaded the twice a year visit of the "School Inspector", he always seemed to be a grump older man who had no sense of humor towards us or our teacher. The teacher would induce him to us, (we had the same gentleman for years) then he would take over the room for half a day, then a half a day in the other room. First he'd tell us about the test and "No talking, whispering, looking at other student papers etc", then he would hand out sheets of test papers to the front person in each row, who in turn passed them to the back. Mean time he'd walk to the back to take back the remaining ones. Then he'd walk to the front, look at the clock on the wall and say "Now you may begin by turning the pages over & putting your name on them and how much time you had". These test where set for your grade level in math, english, spelling, literature & history. After the time was up he told us to pass our papers forward, where he would gather them. We never new if we passed or failed. It wasn't till years later that my Uncle Leo Copp who had been a teacher in the city of Peterborough and area, then a school inspector for the Northern Townships of Peterborough Country & Southern Townships of Haliburton back in the 30's & 40's told me that the inspector wasn't there just to test us on our knowledge, "But on how well the teacher was teaching us". She was really the one that was being tested, and that if after him marking the test he found that this group of students where below the Ontario set average he could fire her on the spot & hire a new teacher. He was also responsible for signing all of the graduating certificates of pupils that graduated grade 8 in his charge. A little unknown information about School Inspectors: Public School Inspectors where always men, traveling by horse in warmer months and by skis (most made their own) in the winter months from school to school. Most schools where located within 4 to 5 miles of each other, thereby the students would only walk about 2 miles either way to school. Most schools where one room schools teaching from grades 1 to 8. In a good week an inspector visited 3 to 4 schools. He gave test to each child in all classes to see if the teacher was teaching the proper subjects & the right way to the rest of the Ontario schools. He was also responsible for signing all of the graduating certificates of pupils that graduated grade 8. The school board arranged & paid for him to stay over night at a home near each school. Once supper was over all the people in that school area would either gather in the home or the school to hear him tell them about what was happening in the out laying areas that he had just visited & any other news he might have. Some even carried newspapers with them to read to these people, even though the paper maybe weeks old, it was new to them. He tried to visit his assigned area twice a year. Church: Both Eva & Leo where very active member in The George Street United Church in Peterborough. Belonged to The Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), & The Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) now both joined as one and called just The "Y". Sent many a child to one of their many camps though out Ontario. The closes being either on Stony Lake, (YMCA Camp Kawartha for boys age 12 to 16), or on Moria Lake at Madoc, Hastings County, Ontario. Camp Quim-O-Ack for girls & boys (2 separate camps). She paid for both her brother Jim’s children Don & Helen way 4 times. They also took Don & Helen on some over night trips of interest, one being to Ottawa in 1965 when Skate Boards where just coming on the market. Hobbies... Golfing, skiing, and traveling around the world. He also made his own skis. Very Involved in many community events. Always owned a dog, boat & a car. Loved to swim, after retiring he & Eva travel around the world on freighter ships during the winter months for many years. Sending post cards back to family members from each port. After his death his body was donated to Queen's University and later returned to Peterborough to be buried in Little Lake Cemetery.
