Note:   Monetta Dorathea Phillips b.11 Oct 1914 Coboconk d.17 Oct 1989 Lindsay, Ontario, Canada Died of Lung Cancer from smoking (a smoker all of her life from 14-75 ), at the Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay, Ontario. The only time she had any health problems. Loved her rum, drank beer as well. Born at home at the top end of Front Street, Coboconk, Ontario, Canada on the Gull River beside the public swimming/boat launch area. Delivered by Dr. J. B. Graham MD Religion... Was raised in the Coboconk Christ Church, later combined with the Methodist Church, in 1925 The Congregations of the Presbyterian & the Methodist Church's combined and renamed their new church "The United Church Of Canada of Coboconk". Work... Worked her summers at Driftwood Lodge on Balsam Lake between Coboconk & Fenelon Falls Hwy 35 which her brother Cleveland Osbourne (CO or Phil) Phillips owned, where she met Jim Outram in 1938. During the winter months she worked in Toronto as a house maid. Marriage... 1938 met James Wellington Outram b.21 Sep 1900 Peterborough d.10 Nov 1998 Lindsay Lived with him from then till they got married in 1967 Bancroft. Their Children... William James “Don”, Helen Dorathea, Jack Philip Outram all born out of wedlock 1945 They brought land in Harcourt Twp., Haliburton Co., Ontario near Wilberforce, on Grace Lake and built "Birch Villa Lodge" there, catering to the American people till the mid 60's when the Vietnam War broke out, & the states got into it big time (Canada stayed out of it). Most summers she was the cook for the dinning room (cooked on a large wood stove, kept food cool in 2 large ice boxes), hired 2 local girls to help out there as well as clean the guest rooms & cottages & look after their 3 children. Pay was $2.00/day with room & board, half a day off, middle of the week. Every December she would go through the Guest Register & send everyone a Christmas Card, postage 2 cents each. Mid 70's closed the dinning room & became known as "Birch Villa Trailer Park & Cottage Resort Ltd." She could do anything a man could do, a very hard worker with long hours. She did all the laundry for the resort, cleaned cottages, painted them interior & exterior every year, cut firewood & raise a family. Even did chinking between the logs in the 4 log cottages & brick work. Sold in 1989 & brought home in Lindsay on top end of Maple St. over looking the Lindsay Golf Coarse. Located at 45 degrees 03' 38.76" N, 78 degrees 13' 20.43" W 1946-1989 Lived full time in Wilberforce, Ontario. Belonged to the Wilberforce United Church. She was very active in it. President of the children Sunday School for years. If the minister was away she would often take his place & give a sermon. She loved to sew, knit & embroidery. She made a lot of her children's clothing, socks, mitts etc. Every winter after Christmas she would set up her quilt frame on the 4 kitchen chairs and start a quilt. Her all hand sewn quilts where beautiful, very colourfully made. She made baby & full size quilts over the years. Most she just gave away to those in need. During the war she knitted 100's of pairs of socks & gloves for the men over seas. Even when the family was in the car she was knitting. She taught her 3 children to sew & knit. She could also sing, whistle & play the piano, banjo & ukulele (like a small 4 string guitar). 1987 March 22 first time over seas To Paris, Doval, France, & London England accompanying Her Husband James W. Outram back home again on Apr 10th. The Canadian Government invited them as Jim was away up in the Royal Canadian Legion. He was a First World War Vet. Our government paid for the trip. Note of interest... 4 out of 7 living children of Ada Routly & William Bill Phillips got into the tourist business... Early 1920's Phil or CO with the help of his brother's Roy & Cecil built a resort he called "Driftwood Lodge" located off Hwy 35 between Rosedale & Coboconk on the east side of Balsam Lake. Catering to the rich. Sold it in the early 1960's. Located at 44 degrees 37' 35.78" N, 78 degrees 48' 23.45" W. 1939 Roy helped his brother Cecil build his resort called The Royal Cabin Lodge on the east side of Balsam Lake. He sold it in 1968 & brought a home in Lindsay. Since known as ”The Royal Resort Ltd.”-- “Royal Lodge” , Rosedale. still in operation 2011. Located at 44 degrees 36' 12.98" N, 78 degrees 47' 33.06" W 1939-26 June 1947 his older sister Bea built The Chateau Riveras, Coboconk, Ont."Gayest Spot in Town" (when gay meant FUN. Taken off the back of a post card). Located on the south side of the Gull River & up on the hill, over looking the town, on Rock St.. Location: 44 degrees 39' 32.23" N, 78 Degrees 47' 45.52" W. 1948 she bought the Oak Manor Lodge, later she renamed it to Moonlite Villa on Balsam Lake. Address was Fenelon Falls, Ontario, so located some wheres between Coboconk & Rosedale on Hwy 35. 1940 Cecil with his brother Roy's help build his resort calling it “Cedar Villa Lodge” on the east side of Balsam Lake, just north of Roy's resort called The Royal Lodge. He sold in the mid 1960's & built a home near Hwy 35 on Royal Cedar Rd.. Cedar Villa Lodge was located some wheres around this location.. 44 degrees 36' 12.98" N, 78 degrees 47' 36.45" W Both used the same road off of Hwy 35, now called Royal Cedar Rd. Where very up beat lodges. Only the wealthy could afford to go there. 1944 their sister Monetta & James Outram brought property up on Grace Lake, Wilberforce, Haliburton Co. & built a resort they called Birch Villa Lodge. They sold in 1989. Located at 45 degrees 03' 38.76" N, 78 degrees 13' 20.43" W All offering the American Plan to the very well to do families. (America Plan was one where the guest paid a lump sum for each person (child or adult) in the party for a week or more. It included a room, or sweat, a in dinning room full course breakfast, lunch, snacks during the afternoon, supper & a snack before bed time.) The death of Monetta's Mother... Her sister Bea was 13 when her mother Ada Althea Routley-Phillips died in October 1918 from the World Wide Influenza Out Brake. Their Grandmother Margaret Dorathea Russell-Phillips & her son Frederick died from it also. Her sister Bea took over the responsibilities of raising the family which comprised of... their father William “Bill” John Phillips, brother's Cleveland Osborne “Phil or OC” 16, William Burton “Burt” 15, Clinton Roddis “Rod” 9, Cecil 7 & sister Monetta Dorathea “Mon or Buddy” 4yrs old. The 2 older boys where working away from home in the logging camps most of the time. Their father was a Mill Wright working at the mill in town owned by the Gull River Lumber Company. When Monetta was old enough to help out at their brother Phil's resort, Driftwood Lodge on Balsam Lake, Bea & her would go there for the summer to work. Bea did this till Monetta was 16, then she left for college. 1918 Oct He brought Cemetery Lot "Coboconk, Ontario & finished paying for it on 7 Sept 1919. Received from William Phillips the sum of ten dollars $10.00. Being full payment for Lot No. 2 in Range A in Coboconk Cemetery. Signed John J. Millipam Care Taker for Bexley Council."
