The use of the "u" or "w" in surnames varies with the different records found in the 17th century, and therefore it is confusing as to which spelling is collect, as the close descendants of William Owtram seem to spell "Outram"! They are also shown as Owtrem, Outrem, Outerim, Outtrim, & Outheram! He stayed in England & established a firm of steel file makers calling it the H Outram & Son Ltd. & Canal Works in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England in 1863. His son Charles OUTRAM (b.1849), & his brother Edward Outram (b.1819) worked for him, as well as other members of the family. Edward Outram (b.1829) was Grand Master of the Manchester Unity of Odd Fellows in 1880. Most of the male Outram clan where members in England & Canada & USA for generations. In 1917 Alfred Allen Outram (b.1895), son of George Alfred Alf Outram visited some Outram's who were related to us in Sheffield. In 1863 Edward Harold Henry OUTRAM (b.1832) started it. His 1863 Edward Frederick & Mary OUTRAM's son George OUTRAM srn (b.1814) & his wife Sarah HUNT & their son Frederick P. OUTRAM (b.1846). After George had finished his apprenticed at the firm of Messrs. Frith and Denton File Manufactures in Sheffield. Trade was a File Maker. He & his family immigrated to the Township of Kincardine, Bruce County, Upper Canada (Ontario) located on the east shores of Lake Huron & Penetangre River, buying a farm comprising of 200 acres. Agriculture claimed him but a short time however, for he soon sold and went down to the United States where he started a file factory. He remained in this business until 1869. When he returned to Montreal, Lower Canada. 1869-71 George OUTRAM srn (b.1814) partnered with his son Frederick P. OUTRAM (b.1846) & started the firm of G. Outram & Son, and known as The Dominion File Factory, the Offices and Works where located at St. Gabriel Locks, near Montreal, Quebec. Here Frederick apprenticed under his father George Outram to become a File Maker. The trade of the firm is with the trade direct, and extends over all parts of Canada. Possessing an extended experience in this line of manufacture, the firm are enabled to produce files and rasps which for excellence and superiority and finish are not surpassed by any others made on this Continent, and which will stand the severest tests. The Dominion File Works are highly commended, and as the firm conduct business on a sound, liberal basis, they will be found prompt and reliable in all transactions. Their goods stand foremost among the best and command the attention of the trade, and are always in demand.His files were at that time among the best on the market; it was a common saying that they would cut through anything. In 1878 he secured the gold medal and diploma at the Paris Exhibition in competition with the world. 1880-87 George Outram srn retired from The Dominion File Company, Fredrick P. Outram owns it now. 1888 Frederick P. OUTRAM partnered with his son George Alfred Alf Outram jrn (b.1872) Trade File Maker and moved the The Dominion File Factory to Port Hope, Ontario. Changing the name to The Globe File Manufacturing Company. They choose Port Hope because of The Ganeraska river supplies an unfailing water power, and access to its forces is readily and cheaply procured. In addition, the Midland portion of the Grand Trunk Railway, bringing the town into touch with almost every part of the great mineral belt of Ontario, and the magnificent harbour possessed by the town, one of the safest and best on the north side of the lake, make this an ideal spot for the establishment of smelting works, blast furnaces and all iron.
