Note: In England her family called her Nellie. Helen was born in Newham, Warwickshire, England, not Turnbridge Wells, Kent Co. as her family always thought. SOURCE: Page out of the Peterborough OUTRAM Family Bible with all the births, marriages entries are written in Helen Pugh-Outram's hand writing including herself & husband William (Billy). She didn't enter the baby girl that died at birth on 18 Apr 1903. The following info is also on note paper in her hand writing... Her Father was in the Imperial Army. When her father came home on leave, he came on horseback. He & his brother where possibly killed in the Boer War in India. Helen & her Mother picked hops & lived in a thatch cottage on the Hopp Estate near Tenbury Wells, Worcestershire, England. Helen's Grandparents (on her Father's side) were gate keepers for the estate Her Grandparents sent her to boarding school, where she ended up working in the kitchen. The Lady of The Manor also gave her some education & sponsored her journey to Canada "for a better life" at the age 17. Her brother Charles who only stayed a short well, went back to England accompanied her there. Charles never married, he was a coal miner in England. Closest friend was Ellen Hopp for whom she named her first born after. Worked for... Hall's (Lawyer), Davidson's Lumber & Wallis Dinning Room as a room-maid. Chest-complete with buttons thread unbleached cotton (calico), embroidery, chemise, pillows-cases. in Peterborough. Helen got married at age 23. After getting married Helen ran a little grocery store till after Ella was born. Helen kept in touch with the Lady of the Manor in England at Christmas, sending pictures of her children etc. From Emmerson Family tree.. Audrey Emmerson-Allman has this info... Birth/Life in England: Not positive about the English info on her, her mom & her brother, however all events point to this as being true. In her story about being from Tunbridge Wells, I think it really was Tenbury Wells - Worcestershire not Kent. On her ship record 1933 it does say she's from Worcestershire. Hop farms are in that area (on google maps for Lindridge, Tenbury Wells you can see hop farms - thus the Hop Farm story still holds. William James (Billy) apprenticed as a butch in Bowmanville, delivering meat in the morning & taking orders for the next day. Came to Peterborough & worked for Johnny Howden, soon opening A.M Butchery. Met Helen Pugh when delivering meat to Hall's (Lawyer) where she worked. Next he worked for Mathew's which became C.P.S. (hard to read her writing) Meats. At 25 Billy & Helen got married. Living 1st on Water St., near Parkhill Road. After getting married Helen ran a little grocery store till after Ella was born. Then they moved to the corner of Gilchrist & Dublin St., then to Sherbrooke St., had a large sow (female big), chickens & a garden. Every day Billy rode a bicycle to work till he retired in 1936. Then they started to buy their homes, 1st on Dublin St., 616 Union St. which was a cottage that they had the roof raised and 2nd floor added before Hazel was born & finally they brought their last home where they both died at198 Edinburgh St. Billy & Helen never moved into a new home until it was completely paid off, they rented it out first. As their family grow so did their homes. When they moved into another one the other one was rented out. In the early 1900's Peterborough had 3 telephone companies, had all 3 in his homes, and businesses. Billy later became General Manager for Cross & Blackwell Meats, who owned 3 meat stores. The main store was located at the SW corner of George & Charlotte Street, (now Peterborough Square Entrance), the 2nd was on the NE corner of George & Brock St., and the 3rd was located on the NW corner of Park & Sherbrooke Street (2014 a corner store) you can still go in the back & see where the meat hooks are on the walls. Cross & Blackwell Meats sold to Canada Packers when they moved into Peterborough in 1936. They brought out all of the small specially shops (bakeries, meats, dairy etc. Anything doing with food & building one BIG Grocery Store where you brought everything you need to cook a meal. Billy retired to his home at 198 Edinburgh St. where he Died one year to the day after retiring from boredom. Billy had to get rid of his prize winning chickens & pigeons about a year before he retired because of allegories to them. In 1917 Bill & Helen brought their first car. By all accounts Billy never drove any of their cars that they owned over the years, he never had a driver's license, They always had one of their children drive them where ever they wanted to go, even to see their cousins the Westcott's in Gamebridge where they spent many a holiday. During the warmer months Helen always took their children on excursions around the Kawartha's either by train or on one of the many boats sailing the Trent System. She liked to teach them new things & show them everything of interest. When the Peterborough Lift Locks officially opened to the public to a crowd of thousands on 9 July 1904, and remains in full use today. Helen & Billy took the children. Their son James Wellington (b.1900) sat on his father's shoulders so he could see. While Helen pushed their new born baby son Edward (Ted) (b.04/1905) in the stroller. Helen always like to wear the mid to finest clothing. She had a good figure till she got older, then became pleasantly plump up until her death. You can see this in the meany pictures of her over the years. She kept a lot of her English ways & passed them on to her daughters. SOURCE: Off Notes written by Helen Pugh-Outram of Peterborough before 1950 Jim Turner Outram, who lives in Bobcaygeon, Ontario, her grandson has the only known picture of her brother Charles Pugh. Also known as Ellen. Note! Hellen was also written Helen. She was a very pretty woman with dark eyes, & reddish brown curly hair, & nice Legs so I was told. Ontario Marriage #10161-90 William J.
