a. Note:   N15204 Obituary from the Friday, 1 June 2007 edition of the "South Bend Tribune", p. E3 [Written by grandson, Jim Stevens, the maintainer of this database]: . "Adeline Davies, 99, died in her sleep on Memorial Day morning, May 28, 2007, at the Country Care West nursing home at 23435 Brick Road in South Bend, where she had been a resident for the last three years. She died just four months before her one hundredth birthday. She was suffering in the last stages of Alzheimer's Disease. . Born Adeline Jegier on Oct 3, 1907, she was a lifelong resident of the South Bend – Niles area. She was the daughter of Polish immigrants, August Jegier and Veronica (Mindykowski) Jegier. She grew up on the west side of South Bend. . Two husbands and all three of her children pre-deceased her. Her first husband, Anthony T. Steszewski, the father of her three children, died in 1958. She was married to Roscoe Davies from 1969 until his death in 1978. Daughter, Alice C. Steszewski , died in 1978, son, Robert J. O'Brien in 1988, and son, Donald A. Stevens in 2002. Also pre-deceasing Adeline were a brother, Edmund H. Jegier in 1964 and a sister, Frances Jegier Ewald in 1980. . Adeline and Anthony operated a farm near the corner of US 12 and Gumwood Road in Niles for many years before moving back to South Bend. Adeline later moved back to the farm and lived there for many years, leaving only when it became necessary for her to take up residence in the nursing home. . Adeline had been quite active for most of her life and could, for many years, be found each weekend at one of the several live dance band venues around the area. She always had a beautiful garden at her home. . Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Joan Stevens; six grandchildren, James, Judi (Black), David, Edward, Richard and Thomas Stevens; five great-grandchildren, Luke and Joanna Stevens (James' children), Erin Black (Mrs. Adam) Blacketter (Judi's daughter), and Brittany & Halie Stevens (Richard's daughters); and two great-great grandchildren, Chloe and Tyler Blacketter. Also surviving Mrs. Davies are two nieces, Mrs. Dorothy Ewald McCarty of Mesa, Arizona, and Virginia "Jeannie" Ewald Zeak of South Bend; and two nephews, Chuck Ewald of Florida and Tom Jegier of South Bend. . Adeline will be missed by her friends and caretakers at Country Care West. The family especially thanks Val & Bob Nielson for the kind care given to Adeline. . Kanewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, is in charge of arrangements. Friends may pay their respects at the funeral home during a memorial service on Saturday, June 2, 2007, at 1:00 p.m. In accordance with her wishes, Adeline's body will be cremated. . In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Country Care West, 23435 Brick Road, South Bend, IN 46628." Anthony & Adeline share a marker in their family plot in St. Joseph Cemetey. It is inscribed: "STESZEWSKI / Adeline (Jegier) Davies 1907-2007 / Anthony T. 1903-1958." Also buried in the plot are their 3 children & daughter in law. The 1910 census for Portage Twp., South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana, ED 170, sheet 10B - at 234 S. Chapin St.: .
