a. Note:   Source: 1930 U.S. Census, Ohio, Lucas County, Spencer Township, ED 48-171, SD 2, Sheet 5B. Jacob and Elizabeth emigarated with their oldest surviving child and Jacob's brother, Peter, in April 1889. They were passengers on the steamship Noordland, which departed form Antwerp, Belgium. The ship arrived at New York City on April 21, 1889, after a voyage of fourteen days. Jacob and Peter settled in Raabs, Ohio. Between 1885 and 1904, Jacob and Elizabeth had nine children: Nikolaus, Elizabeth Teresa, Jacob (Jake) Sylvester, Jr., Peter J., Joseph Peter, Francis Joseph, Wendell Anthony, Rosella (Sal) Mary, and Barbara Frances. The family first lived on Bancroft Road near State Route 295. Then they moved to a house on Raab Road, about a quarter mile from Immaculate Conception church. Jacob worked as a farmer. He became a naturalized US citizen on Nov. 4, 1895. Elizabeth died at age 53 from pulmonary thrombosis. Jacob remarried to Anna Engel Trockur on April 24, 1918. She had been his housekeeper. Jacob died at age 86 from myocarditis and chronic intestinal nephritis.
