a. Note:   d with his family to Boonville, NY in 1851. His nickname was "JH." John attended the local schools, and Philleo Preparatory School, and later the Cazenovia Seminary. In 1867 he became assistant to his father, James, the Station Master of the Black River Railroad. He became Station Master on the death of his father in 1869. John continued the Doig dynasty at the railway depot. His brother, Walter, worked with him as freight and express agent. John was always interested in the prosperity and grown of Boonville, and he took and active part in all civic affairs. In 1900 (page 72) Howard, Jennie and Maude lived on Ann Street in Boonville. He retired in 1910. John was known for his paintings of trout and wild life. He had an exhibit at the Boonville Depot in May of 1897. These pastel paintings sell at good prices in the current upstate New York antique trade. Notice in "Omaha World Herald," 31 July 1897 - "General Claim Agent Manchester of the Union Pacific has received from his friend, J. Howard Doig, N.Y., two hansome pictures of speckled trout, which he placed in Browning, King & Co.'s window so that the people can see them and long for the Mountains." John was confined to his home for twelve weeks with influenza. He died 12 Apr 1919 in Boonville. Obituary- The Journal and Republican and Lowville times., April 17, 1919, Page 5 JOHN HOWARD DOIG Born in Lowville February 26, 1847, Son of James, and Betsy Murray Doig. At an early hour Saturday morning one of Boonville's best known and highly respected citizens, John Howard Doig, passed away. While he had not been in the best of health for some time he was able to be around until a short time ago, when he was stricken with the influenza, and that with other complications was the cause of his demise. Mr. Doig was born February 26, 1847, the son of James and Betsy Murray Doig, at Lowville. His parents moved to Boonville when he was two years old, where he had since resided. He was the New York Central Railroad agent in that place for 45 years, succeeding his father in that capacity. He was a faithful and trusted servant, honorable in the discharge of all his duties. J. Howard Doig was warden of Trinity Episcopal church for a number of years. He was president of the Men's Club of Trinity church, an organization that thrived under his guidance for several years and did a great deal of good. Mr. Doig married Miss Jennie Perry June 9, 1870, by whom he had three children, two sons and one daughter. He Is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. F. Curtis Smith, of Utica, and three grandchildren, also three brothers, James Doig, Lakewood, N.J., Edward Doig, Denver, Col., Augustus Doig Belfort, Ia. Mr. Doig was also well known for his artistic ability, particularly in water color and pastel work, his specialty being trout pictures, in which his was quite expert.
