a. Note:   5 where he lived five years. In 1870 he moved to Michigan, living there eight years. In 1878 he moved to Cloud Co., KS, and in the fall of that year he filed for a homestead in Graham Co. in western Kansas. He settled on the homestead the following spring. In 1880 he built a barn of magnesium stones with the house combined, dug a well which caved in twice, and planted ten acres of corn. The neighbors all got together in the fall to husk the corn. After marriage and the birth of two sons George moved to Scottsville in 1885 where he rented 160 acres for $50.00 with a credit of $2.00 for breaking the land. He planted broomcorn with a yield of 50 bushels per acre; this he sold for $.45 per bushel. In the fall of that year he broke his left leg. In 1886 George moved to Kern's Place, South Concordia, KS where he rented 160 acres for $300. He planted 40 acres of broomcorn for which he got $70.00 per ton. In 1887 he moved to Ben Lake's farm about 6 miles from Concordia. He planted 80 acres of corn and about 80 of oats. The corn burned up. In 1888 he moved to Parker's place about 6 miles out of Concordia. Of the 160 acres, 80 were in pasture and 80 in cultivation. He got about half a crop.. In 1889 he moved to Norton's place with 70 acres in one field, 15 in another, and the balance in timber and pasture. They lived in a log house. He hired two hands and son Carl helped to harrow the awful fields of cockleburs. He got 50 bushels to the acres of corn which sold at $.14 per bushel. The oats yielded 50 bushels to the acre and were light at 28 pounds to the bushel. In 1890 He rented his brother-in-law Theodore Hass' place. He traded on corn with Burton hass and helped him haul his to town. The place didn't grow anything because of a drought and no water in the well. He hauled water 1/2 mile and had to drive 25 cattle to the water. They were nice fat calves at 200-300 pounds and sold for $12.00. In 1891 George went to the state of Washington because his brother Jean had been there. Jean had returned to MI. After a month with no work George returned to Concordia and rented 160 acres from Old Man Saddy. He paid 1/3 of the corn for rent. In the fall he bought 80 acres for $1,000 with $400 down and got a good crop of corn. Then came hard times with no work, no sale of stones from the quarry, and no crops left. In 1894 he rented the La Nave place where he farmed over 1/2 section. Alice had moved across the road with the help of the boys. In 1900 the La Nave place sold, and he moved near Aurora to the Bledsoe place. The raised fair crops. The following year his children Bertha and Walter died of scarlet fever. In 1903 George sold out and moved from Kansas to Dos Palos, CA, the family coming by train in a boxcar. In 1912 he moved to Burrell where Claude built them a new house on 40 acres of "dry farm" land during which time the crops were poor and work scarce. In 1918 he moved from Burrell to a lot in Lanare, a new townsite. He dry farmed in the Murphy Slough area and hired out by the day when work was available. In 1923 he moved to Long Beach, CA and lived with Glen and Harold in the house they had rented. He worked for Stone & Webster on Terminal Island in the machine shop. In 1926 to Compton to a house on Roy's lot. In 1930 he moved back to Dos Palos and lived in a house built on Newell's ranch by Glen and Harold. He lived there until Alice died in 1935. From 1935 to 1944 he lived back an forth between Roy's and Glen's homes. In 1945 he moved to a rest home in Oakhurst, CA. The following year he moved to a rest home in Santa Cruz, CA where he passed away in 1947.
