Note: The Western News (Stockton, KS), 11 Apr 1907: Walter Koontz, the 14-year old son of Milton Koontz of Bow Creek, broke his leg and disloated his ankle joint while wrestling Saturday. Dr. Hinkle treated the youngster and he is getting along nicely. Walter changed his name from Koons to Koontz at school about 1910. In 1920, 1930, and 1940 he farmed at Bow Creek, Phillips Co., KS with wife Zellah and children. Obituary: Walter Milton Koontz was born October, 27, 1893, in Phillips county to Milton and Sarah Altman Koontz and passed away in the Phillips county hospital in Phillipsburg, KS, on September 12, 1964, at the age of 71 years, 10 months and 16 days. He was married to Zellah Marie Kincaid on September 5, 1911. They began their married life on a farm which was his home the rest of his life. To this union, four children were born: Opal Case of Phillipsburg, Brooka Stephenson of Russell, KS, Maxwell of Glade, KS, and Milton of the home. In addition to this wife and children and their families, four brothers, Bert of Osborne, KS, Arthur of Fresno, CA, Glen of Loveland, CO, and Jess of Stockton, KS, two sisters, Flo Richards of Woodston, KS, and Osce Hawks of ElDorado, KS, also mourn his loss. Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers, George and Hobart and two sisters, Sylvia and Verna. He was a good neighbor, a kind husband and father, and a friend to all who knew him. Funeral services were held at Smith's Memorial Chapel at Stockton, KS, at 2 p.m. on September 14, 1964, with Rev. Karl Schuster of the Methodist church officiating. Hymns were sung by the Methodist quartet. Casket bearers were Kimber Chord, Harley Stephenson, Vernon McLaughlin, Bob Baxter, Ed Forssberg and Albert Muir. Burial was in the Bow Creek cemetery.
