Notes
a. Note:   ire, England with his wife Ellen (20 Lancashire). It seems that William deserted or divorced his first wife Ellen as he appears with his second wife to be in the 1851 census. Ellen died on 7 Sept 1853 in Manchester and William remarried to Sarah on 12 Dec 1853 in Manchester. It is also not clear if daughter Annie Elizabeth Doig is by Ellen or Sarah. In 1851 William (38 Ireland) was a millwright lodging at Nelson Bank, Newton, Manchester, Lancashire, England with his "wife" Sarah (23 Manchester); the head of household was a dressmaker Catherine Penningstone, age 38. At his marriage in 1853 he listed himself as an engineer. In 1861 he was an "Inspectar Of Permanent Plant for San Paulo Railway Brazil" at 9 Garscube Road, Milton, St. George, Glasgow, Scotland with wife Sarah, children Annie, William, and Alexander, and a domestic servant Janet Brown (16 Wigton). In 1871 he (57 Scotland) was a millwright residing at 25 Maskell Street, Chorlton on Medlock with his wife Sarah Stopford and children Annie (apprentice dressmaker), Wm. George (Manchester Trade apprentice), and Alexander (scholar). In 1874 he was a mechanical engineer residing at 24 Maskell Street, Chorlton on Medlock. Witness to William's death certificate was his son William George Doig.
Note:   In 1841 William (25 Scotland) was a millwright residing at Cheetham Street, Cheetham, Lancash
