Enrolled 16 Jun 1863 at New Orleans LA for three years, Discharged 21 Jun 1865 at Mower General Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa.. In the hospital he was suffering from chronic diarrhea. Five feet nine inches tall, light complexion, gray eyes, dark hair, occupation when enrolled carpenter. He participated in the battles of Fort Hudson LA, Gravelly Run, 31 Mar 1865 and Five Forks 1 Apr 1865. Total deaths in the regiment were 298 of which 113 were killed or died of wounds. He lived at 37 Quincy Street, Somerville MA for many years but died at 7 New Church St. Somerville, MA. He was very sickly in the last years of life suffering from malaria, asthma, bronchitis, chronic diarrhea and rheumatism. In 1892 his height was given as 5ft 9 inches 184 pounds, four years later his weight had fallen to 160 pounds. Daughter Alice would have been named after Luther's grandmother Alice Carter 1781-1868. Harriet would have been named after Luther's brothers (Cyrus) wife, and Luther himself would have been named after his uncle.
