Note: Letter from Marjorie E Rattew (Stroud): Grandma Rattew (Agnes Susan Cousins) Born July 23, 1897 at 341 Barrie Rd. (her father Robert cousins built the house) Agnes was the daughter of Margaret Kydd and Robert Cousins Agnes & Charlie Rattew met in London, Ont. Charles lived there and Agnes was working there as a maid for a rich lady (Mrs. Fox). Agnes was a friend of Nellie Hiscock it was Nellie that introduced Agnes to Charles. Agnes & Charlie became engaged, they came to Orillia & were married at 341 Barrie Rd. They spent one night for their honeymoon in a house on Matchadash St in Orillia before going back to London to live. Albert was born in London as was Doris (your mom). Charlie's nerves were very bad from being wounded in World War 1. You probably know that he had no use of his right hand for several years his arm just hung down, he had a fall off his bicycle because of this. The doctor suggested that they go north, his nerves were so bad he couldn't work. So they moved to Cochrane when Albert was about 3 that would make Doris around 1 yrs. They lived in a couple of different places before getting the 150 acres of land from the government for clearing so much (trees) each year. Charlie worked & worked on his hand so he could close it as the fingers had been straight. They bought lumber to build the 16' x 20' house & later built a beautiful barn which I actually saw when we went up to Frederickhouse the first time when Fred & Rob were little we stayed at Mrs. Moore's. Think it was 1955, we stayed a week. They had gone up to Cochrane for Grandad's health, they came to Orillia, then in 1936-7 came down to Orillia after grandma couldn't walk as her arches had fallen from walking in running shoes while working helping the men. When they came back to Orillia from the north, they rented a house in town then when Robert Cousins estate was settled they bought the house actually it was left to the sisters & they bought it from them paid them their share of the inheritance.
